It was a controversial season for St. Bonaventure senior Darrell Scott, starting with his transfer from Moorpark to play for the Seraphs and ending with his exclusion from the All-Ventura County teams, voted on by the county coaches.
But in the end, Scott's season, and career, accomplishments were too hard to ignore. Besides rushing for 2,433 yards on 274 carries with 34 touchdowns, Scott also finished his career with 7,615 yards and 99 touchdowns, which rank among the highest totals in state history. Additionally, he helped lead the Seraphs to a Division 3 Bowl Game championship with a win over Central Catholic. Scott also claims the MaxPreps Division 3 Player of the Year honors and heads a team that includes three other St. Bonaventure teammates as well as three members of the Central Catholic team the Seraphs faced in the state finals.
The players for the Division 3 team are selected from the schools that played in Division 3 for the CIF bowl games. These include schools with 1,000 students or less in Northern California and schools with 1,100 or less in Southern California. Teams were selected by Kevin Askeland and Mitch Stephens of MaxPreps.com.
DIVISION 3
First Team
WR - Montreal Harris, Twentynine Palms, 6-2, 205, Jr
Also a basketball standout Harris was solid at receiver and defensive back for Twentynine Palms. He earned All-San Bernardnio County honors while catching 39 passes for 748 yards and 13 touchdowns while also getting five interceptions on defense.
WR - Jared Garcia, Healdsburg, 6-1, 165, Sr
The top receiver in the Redwood Empire of the North Coast Section, Garcia had 62 catches for 1,261 yards and 16 touchdowns. He finished his career with 107 catches for 2,199 yards and 28 scores.
TE - Scott Cathcart, St. Joseph, Sr
Cathcart earned league MVP honors and was All-Santa Barbara County after catching 42 passes for 531 yards and four touchdowns. Also had four sacks on defense.
OL - Vaughn Dotsy, St. Bonaventure, 6-5, 350, Sr
One of the top linemen in the state, Dotsy earned All-LA Times and All-Ventura County honors while opening holes for Seraph running back Darrell Scott. He has yet to make his college choice.
OL - Jonathan Martin, Harvard-Westlake, 6-6, 270, Sr
Martin is still considering his college choices, according to Rivals.com, selecting between Stanford and UCLA. He earned All-LA Daily News first team honors this year.
OL - Allen Carroll, McClymonds, 6-4, 290, Sr
The top lineman in the Bay Area, Carroll was a San Francisco Chronicle All-Metro pick. He is still considering his college choice.
OL - Trace Biskin, Oaks Christian, 6-6, 275, Sr
Biskin is headed to Arizona next year after winning All-Ventura County and All-LA Daily News honors while helping lead Oaks Christian to a division title.
OL - Sione Tuihalamaka, Serra, 6-3, 268, Jr
Already a two-year starter on both sides of the line for Serra, Tuihalamaka was named to the All-Torrance Daily Breeze team after helping lead Serra to a 10-2 record.
QB - Max Pond, Cardinal Newman, 6-0, 180, Sr
Moved from wide receiver to quarterback and earned San Francisco Chronicle North Bay MVP honors. He ran 173 times for 928 yards and 17 scores and also completed 195 passes in 288 attempts for 2,403 yards and 23 touchdowns.
RB - Darrell Scott, St. Bonaventure, 6-2, 215, Sr
Scott led the Seraphs to a CIF Division 3 bowl championship over Central Catholic, rushing for 2,433 yards on 274 carries with 34 touchdowns during the season. He earned All-LA Times and All-Ventura Star honors and completed his career, including two seasons at Moorpark, with 903 carries, 7,615 yards, 99 touchdowns and 604 points.
RB - Kenjon Barner, Notre Dame Riverside, 5-11, 180, Sr
Barner led the state in rushing with 3,124 yards on 416 carries with 46 total touchdowns and 296 points. The All-Riverside County pick completed his career with 4,883 yards, 69 touchdowns and 470 points. He'll play at Oregon next season.
AP - Louis Bland, Central Catholic, 6-0, 190, Sr
One of the state's best two-sport athletes, Bland, who is a two-time state wrestling champion, was the Modesto Bee MVP after rushing for 1,763 yards on 190 carries with 32 touchdowns. He finishes his career as the Sac-Joaquin Section's all-time leading scorer with 107 touchdowns and 644 points. He also had 490 career carries for 5,140 yards.
AP - Cierre Wood, Santa Clara, 6-0, 195, Jr
Expected to be one of the top recruits in the country next year, Wood earned All-Ventura County Small Schools MVP honors with 178 carries for 2612 yards, 42 TDs, and 276 points. He already has 67 career touchdowns and 430 points.
DL - Loren Powers, St. Bonaventure, 6-3, 211, Sr
Powers was the Channel League defensive MVP while making 97 tackles with four sacks.
DL - Dominic Galas, Central Catholic, 6-2, 270, Sr
Galas developed into a Pac-10 recruit as an offensive lineman, which he'll play at Oregon State. However he also was dominant on defense and earned All-District honors by the Modesto Bee on that side of the line.
DL - Travis Johnson, King's Academy, 6-3, 220, Jr
Johnson earned All-Mercury News first team honors after racking up 21 sacks.
LB - Malcolm Jones, Oaks Christian, 6-0, 205, Soph
Although he ran for 2,025 yards and 29 touchdowns, Jones was also a standout on defense with 69 tackles for Oaks Christian. He was named to the All-LA Daily News team and the All-Ventura County team.
LB - Chad Davis, Palma, 6-1, 195, Sr
Davis was the leader for Palma, which finished behind Gilroy in the Tri-County League. Davis earned Monterey Bay defensive player of the year honors from the Monterey County Herald.
LB - Jesse Ceron, Big Bear, 6-2, 230, Sr
Ceron led Big Bear with 104 tackles and seven interceptions while earning All-San Bernardino County honors.
LB - Patrick Kelly, Christian, 6-2, 240, Sr
Besides being named to the All-San Diego team by the Union Tribune, Kelly was also the East County Defensive MVP. He had 104 tackles in leading Christian to the section finals against Bishop's.
DB - Chris Potter, Oaks Christian, 5-11, 170, Sr
A big offensive weapon for the Lions with 1,904 yards and 21 touchdowns passing and 19 TDs rushing, Potter was also valuable on defense with eight interceptions. Named All-Ventura County and All-LA Daily News. He'll play at Boise state next year.
DB - Patrick Hall, St. Bonaventure, 6-1, 165, Jr
Valuable on offense and defense for the Seraphs, Hall was in on 69 tackles and had two interceptions while earning All-Ventura County honors.
DB - David Green, Paraclete, 6-1, 175, Sr
Green led the state with 12 interceptions and earned All-LA Daily News honors and was the Antelope Valley Defensive MVP.
DB - Brendan Chambers, Saddleback Valley Christian, 6-0, 170, Sr
The Coastal League MVP did it all for Saddleback Valley Christian, rushing for 1,146 yards on 164 carries with 26 touchdowns while also completing 155 of 242 passes for 2,757 yards and 32 scores. He also had 52 tackles and eight interceptions on defense. He finishes his prodigious career with 459 carries for 2,744 yards and 48 TDs, 363 completions, 626 attempts, 5,716 yards and 66 touchdowns, 149 tackles and 15 interceptions.
K/P - Logan Budd, Morro Bay, 6-2, 185, Sr
The San Luis Obispo County MVP and the Northwest Division MVP, Budd had seven field goals and 44 extra points to go with 24 touchbacks. Also a talented punter with a 40.27 average. On offense, he completed 90 of 162 passes for 1,668 yards and 16 touchdowns while also running 189 times for 1,360 yards and 22 scores. He also picked off nine passes on defense and has 20 career interceptions.
Second Team
WR - Alex Martinez, Carmel, 6-2, 186, Sr
One of the state's leading receivers with 80 catches for 1,126 yards and 13 touchdowns, Martinez was an All-Monterey Bay pick.
WR - Nick Witte, Sage Hill, 5-10, 160, Sr
Witte finished second in the state with 1,548 yards on 66 catches with 17 touchdowns.
WR - Donnie McWhirter, Western Christian, 5-10, 175, Sr
McWhirter was one of the more prolific receivers in the state with 63 catches for 1,371 yards and14 touchdowns.
OL - Ben Savaii, Taft, 6-0, 250, Jr
Savaii has been a two-year starter at Taft, leading the Wildcats to a section title and earning All-Bakersfield honors.
OL - Kyle Reitz, Caruthers, 5-10, 215, Sr
Named to the All-Fresno Bee team and helping Caruthers reach the second round of the playoffs.
OL - Chasen Smith, St. Margaret's, 6-3, 210, Jr
Smith was the league's most valuable lineman and opened up the holes for Hunter Steffien while helping St. Margaret's to a second straight unbeaten season.
OL - Bill Tyndall, Pacific Grove, 6-4, 250, Jr
The big junior paved the way for Monterey County offensive MVP Ian Hesse and was also named to the All-Monterey County team.
OL - Daniel Johansen, Central Catholic, 5-11, 210, Sr
A two-time most valuable lineman in the Western Athletic League, Johansen also was named to the All-District team by the Modesto Bee.
QB - Andy Magee, Chadwick, 6-2, 210, Sr
Magee led the state in touchdown passes with 50 and completed 261 of 401 passes for 3,713 yards. He completes his career with 6,548 yards (469-751) and 72 touchdowns.
RB - Dwayne Radden, Aquinas, 5-8, 180, Sr
Radden continued the tradition of 2,000-yard rushers at Aquinas with 2,250 yards on 294 carries with 29 touchdowns. He was named All-San Bernardino County.
RB - Aubrey Haynes, St. Paul, 5-10, 220, Sr
Haynes led St. Paul to a Southern Section divison title and was named the Whittier Area MVP while gaining 1,213 yards on 184 carries with 13 touchdowns.
AP - Jamie McGee, Sage Hill, 6-2, 180, Sr
McGee completed his career with 8,192 yards and 90 touchdowns (489-820) after completing 199 of 314 passes for 3,362 yards and 39 touchdowns this year.
AP - Hunter Steffien, St. Margaret's, 6-2, 205, Sr
Steffien was one of the state's leading scorers with 44 touchdowns and 264 points while rushing 233 times for 2,350 yards during St. Margaret's unbeaten season.
DL - Tyler Morehead, Sutter, 6-2, 200, Sr
Morehead was a defensive force for the unbeaten Huskies, racking up 129 tackles and 14 scks while earning All-Northern Section first team honors.
DL - Cameron Faniel-Jones, Serra, 6-3, 257, Sr
Faniel-Jones earned a spot on the All-Torrance Daily Breeze team after picking up nine sacks on the season.
DL - Ryan Boschma, Bakersfield Christian, 6-5, 210, Jr
Boschma was second in the state with 22 sacks for Bakersfield Christian. He earned All-Bakersfield 2nd team honors.
LB - Mike Meekins, St. Patrick's, 5-8, 165, Jr
Meekins was the Vallejo city defensive MVP by the Vallejo Times Herald after leading the Bruins to the section championship game with over 100 tackles on the season.
LB - Colton Russi, Colfax, 6-2, 230, Sr
Russi was an All-Sac-Bee selection with 137 tackles for the Falcons.
LB - Brant Botill, Corcoran, 5-10, 195, Jr
An outstanding running back with 1,971 yards rushing and 23 touchdowns, Botil was also a standout on defense with 147 tackles while earning All-Fresno Bee honors.
LB - Ily Lopez, Avenal, 6-1, 225, Sr
One of the top rushers in the state the past two season, Lopez was also a terror on defense. He had 5,843 yards and 79 touchdowns in his career on 638 carries while also racking up 284 career tackles with 12 sacks. An All-Fresno Bee selection for the second year in a row.
DB - Jake Morris, Ferndale, 5-9, 168, Sr
Morris led the Wildcats to a 23-2 record over the past two seasons as quarterback and defensive back, including a win over St. Patrick's in the North Coast Section A championship game. He was named the Humboldt Del-Norte Conference MVP by the Times-Standard.
DB - Malcolm Webb, Wheatland, 5-10, 195, Jr
Webb was near the state lead in interceptions for the entire season, picking off 11 passes for the Pirates and earning All-Northern Section first team honors.
DB - Jorge Chaidez, Bell-Jeff, 5-10, 175, Sr
Chaidez set Burbank city rushing records with over 4,000 career yards, including 2,360 yards and 30 touchdowns this year. He also was a standout on defense, earning All-LA Daily News 2nd team honors at defensive back with 66 tackles and three interceptions.
DB - Tim Costello, Bishop's, 5-10, 185, Sr
A versatile performer for undefeated Bishop's, which won a San Diego section championship, Costello had 19 touchdowns for the season and had three interceptions on defense.
K/P - Oscar Pineda, Hamilton, 5-9, 180, Jr
Pineda tied for the longest field goal in the state this season at 57 yards. He finished with nine field goals and 85 kicking points while also averaging 45 yards a punt.
