Today I spoke to Eric Sondheimer of the Los Angeles Times today, and got a chance to get a great local perspective of Friday's game. Eric's been following high school sports around here for a long time, and does a great job covering it at the Times.
Eric thought that Mater Dei was unbeatable, he said, until Orange Lutheran knocked them off rather handily over the weekend. Orange Lutheran was recently beaten by Servite. Both Mater Dei and Servite have only one loss. Both Mater Dei and Servite have garnered attention in national rankings.
They each have their superstars. Mater Dei has junior Matt Barkley, maybe the best QB in the country. Servite has runningback D.J. Shoemate, who has already pledged to attend USC next year, and has been a horse for the Friars all season long.
So, we could be seeing some of the top players in the country, on two of the top teams anywhere.
This seems like it could be the most evenly matched game that we've seen this entire trip. I'm as excited for this game as I am to check out Disneyland at some point this week!
Check back tomorrow for more!~SS
