In news first reported by David Hinojosa of the San Antonio Express-News, San Antonio Brandeis head coach Charles Bruce announced Wednesday that he had been promoted to assistant athletic director at Northside ISD after leading the Broncos for the past three seasons.

Bruce is best known for an eight-year run at San Antonio Wagner from 2013-2020 where he led the Thunderbirds to a pair of Class 5A-Division I state semifinal appearances in 2018 and 2019. In 2022 he posted a 9-3 mark leading the Broncos, he led BHS to the playoffs in each of his three seasons at the helm.

“It’s great opportunity to impact the entire district, not just one program," Bruce said. "I’m proud to be a part of a great athletic department here at Northside ISD. Now I get to be a fan of 12 schools and that’s exciting. I’m going to miss being in the locker room, game-planning and being around the kids daily for sure. I’ll still get to feel the Friday night lights, but I’ll also get to watch all the sports and that will be a lot of fun."

The San Antonio native played for legendary Converse Judson head coach D.W. Rutledge where he was part of a state championship team in 1983. He spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at San Antonio Wagner before spending one season on staff at Cibolo Steele before being named Wagner’s head coach in early 2013.

After winning just five games in his first three seasons combined at Wagner, Bruce’s squad showed signs of life in 2017 before breaking out with back-to-back 13-2 marks in 2018-2019. Bruce moves into administration with a 64-58 overall record as a head coach.

Despite explosive growth in Northside ISD, Brandeis is considered one of the better jobs in the area and will attract plenty of statewide interest. Northside ISD has a history of hiring internally, but Brandeis has been a bit of an exception with coaches like Jeff Fleener and Charles Bruce both coming from outside the district in recent years.
