How to speak Texan, "Football!" That is exactly what I learned today after watching three great games at the "Texas Football Classic." Woodlands, with an enrollment of 3810 students, were both of our favorites going into the game against Smithson Valley, but in the end they didn't show up to play, and the Highlanders never even got close to an opportunity to stick their sword into the Rangers. The final score was 17-3 with the second half being nothing but defense. The second game was a run and gun fest. Texas City ran, and Lake Travis threw. The sophomore quarterback for Lake Travis, Garrett Gilbert, impressed me a lot. He had mobility, strength in his arm, and poise for such a young buck. In the end, all that proved enough for him to come out victorious in his first varsity start. The last game of the night was between McAllen Memorial and Victoria Memorial. The player everybody came to see was Bradley Stephens, and man did he deliver with not only his running, but his defense and kicking skills as well. All those tools that he used made for a sweet victory for the Mustangs from the Valley.
This was my day, and it sure did go by fast. I was standing on the field in the Alamo dome, and watching football all day. This is a dream come true. Tomorrow will be a lot more relaxing, but today was an experience I will never forget.
