David Reid's swimming abilities took him to a level no other Salina Central swimmer has reached in 32 years, at least as far as the 200-meter individual medley is concerned.
Reid swam to a school record time of 2 minutes, 3.51 seconds in winning the event and leading the Mustangs to the team championship in its own invitational with 573 points last Thursday. Topeka finished second with 333 points.
Reid also reaped gold in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.47 seconds, and swam legs on the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:34.21) and the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:30.59). Gavin Smith, Jon Albrecht and Travis Rolfs teamed up with Reid in the shorter relay, while Reid swam with Smith, Albrecht and Andrew Hrabe in the 400 freestyle relay.
Girls Basketball: Mizzou Signee Goes Off
Labette County's Kendra Frazier proved she was Big XII-ready last Friday when she erupted for 44 points and 20 rebounds during a 62-51 overtime victory at Southeast Kansas League foe Fort Scott. She also displayed her ability to take over a game when her abilities were needed the most - during crucial stretches of the game.
"I didn't even know she had 44 until after but that made sense because no one else had to score for them," Fort Scott head coach Jeff Armstrong told the Nevada Daily Mail. "The girls did a very good job on Frazier; she's really just a very good player."
Frazier carried the Grizzlies into overtime when she grabbed an offensive rebound and made the follow shot with eight seconds remaining in regulation. She then scored the first six points of the extra frame to give her team a 55-49 advantage with 2:34 seconds left in the contest.
The 6-foot-4 senior also gave Labette County its first lead of the game when she made a pair of free throws with 5:45 left on the clock in the second period. She scored the first 10 points of the fourth period.
Frazier, who signed a letter-of-intent to play for the Missouri Tigers last month, had a heyday against a much shorter Tiger lineup. Fort Scott's tallest player on the floor Friday stood at 5-9.
Boys Basketball: Dippel Scores 57 in Overtime Win
Chase Dippel couldn't have picked a better night to score a career high 57 points for Smoky Valley.
While the rest of his team struggled for any offensive consistency, the 6-0 Dippel hardly missed a shot in leading the Vikings to an 81-72 overtime win over Chaparral at the Cheney Classic basketball tournament.
Dippel connected on 20 of 30 shots from the field, including a five-of-nine performance from beyond the arc, and made 12-of-14 charity tosses in tallying nearly five dozen points in what is thought to be a Viking record.
The junior, whose previous high of 32 points came against Salina Sacred Heart last season, scored 10 of Smoky Valley's 18 points in overtime and had 27 points at intermission. Dippel stayed hot in the second half despite Chaparral's move to a box-and-one.
"He was scoring from anywhere and everywhere," Smoky Valley coach John Bellah told The Hutchinson News. "He's been shooting the ball so well in practice. I thought he might have some 40-plus games, but I wasn't expecting anything like that."
"I was getting every roll," Dippel told The Hutchinson News. "I was getting in the lane and, if it wasn't a swish, it was rolling in."
