Pocatello, the fourth-largest city in Idaho, will increase in population this weekend as teams and fans from neighboring Utah descend on Idaho State University for the 2009 Rocky Mountain Rumble.
The Rumble, created and managed by the Rocky Mountain Sports Foundation, is in its second year of existence and pits top Idaho high school football teams against other states in a four-game event. The 2008 event featured four of the top high school teams from Idaho (Minico, Lake City, Idaho Falls and Highland) taking on four opponents from California (Colfax, Del Oro, Whitney and Grant). All four of the games were played on the same day at Holt Arena, home of the Idaho State Bengals.
The 2009 event will introduce Idaho vs. Utah in a much-anticipated showdown. Participating from Idaho are the Lake City Timberwolves (Coeur d’Alene), the Minico Spartans (Rupert), the Pocatello Indians and the Highland Rams (Pocatello).
Traveling from Utah are the Sky View Bobcats (Smithfield), the Bear River Bears (Garland), the Mountain Crest Mustangs (Hyrum) and the Highland Rams (Salt Lake City). All eight of the teams have traditions of athletic excellence and boast numerous current and past collegiate and professional players.
