Upsets are a part of high school football, but they are even bigger when the stakes are high and with the Tennessee State Playoffs going into the second round, here's a look back at top five upsets in Week 1.
ÿ
1. William Blount 13, Dobyns-Bennett 10 - All is not right in Kingsport. Dobyns-Bennettÿ (10-1) wore the No. 1 ranking in Class 5A all season and completed yet another undefeated season, but like previous years, the playoffs continue to be the Indians' downfall.
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ
For the second time in five years, William Blount came to Kingsport and stole a victory, this time on the right foot of Joe Coelho as he booted a 32-yard field goal with 4:32 left in the game.
ÿ
The Walker boys, Darren and T.J., were tough on the ground for the Indians as Darren had 64 yards rushing while T.J. accounted for 50 yards including a nine-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 10-10.
ÿ
Now the Governors (7-4) will travel to Knoxville and rematch with region rival Farragut, who nipped William Blount, 17-16, in overtime in week six.
ÿ
2. Ravenwood 28, Gallatin 15 - People across the state should have seen this upset coming when the playoff brackets were drawn.
ÿ
Ravenwood, the defending Class 5A state champion, went on the road to Gallatin and beat the Green Wave as Raptor quarterback Michael Becker and wide receiver Michael Ayers both had big games via the passing game.
ÿ
Becker went 14-of-22 for 191 yards and two touchdowns. Both went to Class AAA state decathlon champion Ayers, who beat the Green Wave secondary for 140 yards on seven catches.
ÿ
With the win, Ravenwood has now defeated Gallatin in the first round two of the last three seasons, as they also won in 2004 and will play Antioch next. That game will reunite them with former Raptor defensive coordinator and current Bear head coachÿ Mike Woodward, who helped Ravenwood win the state title last season.
ÿ
3. Haywood 28, Sheffield 20 - Payback is always a good thing, especially in the first round of the playoffs.
ÿ
Haywood (4-7) entered the Class 3A playoffs with three wins, but upset Sheffield behind three touchdown runs by running back Luther Ward, including the game-winner.
ÿ
ÿ
Haywood got revenge for a Week 1, 12-0 setback to Sheffield (7-4) as Ward rushed for 94 yards on 21 carries. Haywood will now face region rival Dyersburg (10-1), who beat Haywood 10-7 in week 8.
ÿ
4. Lake County 14, Fayette Academy 12 - Lake County players remember the score - 53-14.
ÿ
After all, it was the score of last year's Class 1A first round playoff loss to Fayette Academy, but this season, the Vikings had a couple of tricks up their sleeve.
ÿ
Until this year's breakthrough win against the Vikings, Lake Co. (8-3) had been defeated by the Fayette Academy the last two seasons.
ÿ
The playoff win was also the first playoff win for the school since 1996 and next week they travel to Trinity Christian.
ÿ
Trailing 12-6 at the half, the Falcons got a 14-yard quarterback keeper from Brandon Springer to tie the game at 12-12, then they converted a two point conversion try to win 14-12.
ÿ
5. York Institute 15, Tyner 8 - Going home after the first round is not how Tyner usually operates, but this season wasn't like every other season for the Rams (6-5).
ÿ
York came to Chattanooga and behind Cody Hamby's two-yard run, the Dragons (8-3) made the lead stand up as they will make their first second round playoff appearance in 26 years.
ÿ
The Dragons will rematch with region foe Westmoreland, who beat York 19-12 in week six.
