The rebuilding Indiana University basketball program received another long-term shot in the arm Sunday when Trey Lyles, a 6-foot-9, 200-pound freshman from
Arsenal Tech (Indianapolis, Ind.), made a commitment to the Hoosiers.
Lyles’ announcement comes on the heels of an earlier commitment by another super-talented freshman, 6-2 guard James Blackmon from Bishop Luers (Fort Wayne, Ind.).
Tech coach Frank Kendrick, a former star at Purdue University, told MaxPreps that Lyles’ early choice was no surprise to him.
"He visited Ohio State and Purdue, but he knew where he was going," Kendrick said. "He’s a Hoosier and only lives 35 miles (from the Bloomington campus). He’s going to be a key – like Eric Gordon was.
"It’s scary. When you see him play you think he’s a senior. Barring something unforeseen, he’s going to be the first pick in the NBA draft (after his first year in college). He has a great head on his shoulders and all the things a coach dreams of."
Kendrick noted that Lyles will be 15 years old on Nov. 5 and he easily could end up being a 7-footer.
