Upsets happen, and it only intensifies in rivalry games. New No. 24 Franklin (Elk Grove) returned to the Top 25 with its spirited 28-21 triumph of previous No. 2 Elk Grove in a Delta Valley Conference game.
Franklin graduated all of its offensive starters from its 12-1 team of 2012.
Showdowns this week include No. 2 Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove) at No. 4 Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) and No. 5 St. Mary's (Stockton) taking on No. 15 Stagg (Stockton).

Ian Broom ran for 124 yards on 22 carries and a score, and
Deaundre Terrell scored on a nifty 38-yard touchdown burst down the sideline.

Dylan Kainrath carried 54 times for 244 yards and three one-yard scoring plunges, and
Mason Humes coolly drilled a 28-yard field goal as time expired in a 30-28 thriller over Granite Bay in Sierra Foothill League play.
Michael Moore directed the late touchdown drive and passed for 156 yards. The defense held Granite Bay to 19 yards rushing on 13 carries. The losses were to NorCal No. 1 De La Salle (Concord) and Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks).

Ian Book tossed four touchdowns, two to

James Portilla combined for 20 tackles in the Delta River League game. The loss was to top-ranked Folsom.
