Oklahoma: Ginther Sparks Jenks Past Muskogee

Mark Ginther tosses six touchdown passes as Jenks survives shootout at Indian Bowl; McAlester's Walters vital in victory.

Mark Ginther, Jenks

 

Ginther threw his first interception of the season in a 50-35 victory over Muskogee. That's about all that went wrong for the Oklahoma State baseball recruit. Ginther's first two passes of the night went for 49 yards and two touchdowns. By the time the third quarter was over, Ginther had thrown for six touchdown passes as the Trojans took a commanding 43-29 lead. Ginther finished with 275 yards on 16-of-24 passing for the Trojans.

 

Honorable Mention

 

Austin Giles - Lawton MacArthur: Giles threw for 276 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Highlanders to a 54-7 victory over Duncan. Giles added a rushing touchdown and 14 tackles on the night.

 

Kye Staley - Guthrie: Another busy night for the Oklahoma State-bound athlete in a 51-7 rout of El Reno. Staley threw for two touchdowns, had a touchdown run, and caught a 93-yard touchdown from Keaton Callins in the easy victory for the Bluejays.

 

Tommy Kelley - Bishop Kelley: In a 30-21 loss to Tulsa East Central, Kelley threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns, and also added another on the ground, as the Comets gave the fourth-ranked Cardinals all they could handle.

 

Herman Walters - McAlester: Walters had over three bills in total yards as the Buffaloes rolled to a 49-34 victory over Durant. Walters finished with 209 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries. Walters also added a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the victory.

 

Bo White- Durant - White is arguably the best all-around athlete in Class 5A not named Kye Staley. White rushed for four touchdowns and added a 98-yard kickoff return in a 49-34 loss to McAlester.

 

Dillan Vaughn - Coweta: Vaughn threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns to lead Coweta to a 45-14 victory over Catoosa. Vaughn also added 82 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Class 6A

1. Tulsa Union. 6-0 (1)

Defeated Tulsa Memorial, 49-0. Brandon Rogers threw for 192 yards and three touchdowns to lead Union to the comfortable victory. Junior running back Jeremy Smith added 64 rushing yards and two touchdowns in light work for the Redskins. Anthony Foster had grabbed two passes for scores to pace Union.

 

2. Jenks. 5-1 (2)

Defeated Muskogee, 50-35. Mark Ginther was 16-of-24 for 275 yards and six touchdowns as the Trojans survived a major test from Muskogee's Legion of Doom defense. Chris Adkins added 145 rushing yards and a fourth quarter touchdown to put the game away for the defending state champions.

 

3. Muskogee. 4-2 (3)

Lost to Jenks, 50-35. Quarterback Trae Cook passed for 289 yards and five touchdowns, but it was not enough against Jenks' offensive juggernaut in the Indian Bowl. The Roughers ran three fake punts in the first quarter in an attempt to catch the Trojans off-guard. Jameel Owens had two touchdown receptions for the Roughers.

 

4. Norman North. 5-1 (4)

Defeated U.S. Grant, 49-0. Junior running back Beau Blakenship rushed for 180 yards and four touchdowns on only eight carries in the rout at C.B. Speegle Stadium in Oklahoma City.

 

5. Midwest City. 6-0 (5)

Defeated Norman, 30-21. Midwest City needed 23 unanswered points to claim the victory in Norman. Trailing 21-7 in the fourth quarter, junior running back Antonio Brown started the Bombers rally with an 8-yard touchdown reception from Jace Chilcoate. Chilcoate found John Flanders with 4:10 remaining from 65 yards out to tie the affair at 21. Tim Flanders capped off the comeback with a 33-yard run to seal the victory for the Bombers.

 

6. Owasso. 5-1 (6)

Defeated Bartlesville, 48-6. Mike Shouse and Jacques Washington did their part in getting the Rams back on the winning track following a loss to Jenks. Shouse threw for nearly 200 first half yards and three touchdowns, while Washington rolled to 120 yards and two touchdowns for Owasso.

 

7. Putnam City. 6-0 (7)

Defeated Choctaw, 24-7. Tyler Wegner rushed for two touchdowns and added a 23-yard field goal in the victory for the Pirates. The Putnam City defense forced four Choctaw turnovers as Putnam City remained unbeaten.

 

8. Broken Arrow. 3-3 (8)

Defeated Enid, 42-17. The Tigers rolled to their third straight victory as Jerrod Green and Chris Ford combined for 327 rushing yards. Junior quarterback Cale Fulps threw for 165 yards and two touchdowns and added another on the ground in the rout for Broken Arrow.

 

9. Putnam City North. 5-1 (9)

Defeated Lawton, 14-7. A Hunter Frantz 75-yard interception return for six was the difference in the victory over Lawton. Josh Booker scored on a 2-yard touchdown run in the third quarter for the Panthers.

 

10. Westmoore. 4-2 (NR)

Defeated Yukon, 37-21. Tracey Norwood rushed for three touchdowns as Westmoore racked up 357 rushing yards, with Norwood's 120 yards leading the way. Craig Ralls and Devon Schiffman added touchdown runs for the Jaguars.

Moore created three touchdowns with its defense and special teams in a 37-0 victory over Mustang. David Taylor and Cody Bivens both returned fumbles for scores, and Devin Johnson returned a kickoff 100 yards for a score for the Lions. Jared Jackson rushed for two touchdowns. Randy Ponder rushed for 111 in his return from a knee injury at Edmond Santa Fe beat Putnam City West, 28-16. Steven Sumpter rushed for two touchdowns for the Wolves.

Edmond Memorial claimed an impressive road victory over Lawton Eisenhower, 22-21. Lawton Eisenhower continues its head-scratching tailspin, losing its fourth straight.

Del City held a 10-point advantage over Stillwater before Grant Field led the comeback. The Pioneers claimed the victory, 35-20. Edmond North defeated Ponca City 35-14 on Thursday to move to 2-1 within the district.

Sand Springs rolled out to a 21-0 lead in the first half and never looked back against its rivals. Sophomore quarterback Johnny Deaton threw for two touchdown passes and ran for another to give the Sandites the large lead.. Justin Skillens rushed for a 28-yard touchdown and later hauled back an interception 85 yards for a touchdown to help Tulsa Washington down Tahlequah, 22-7.

 

Class 5A

1. Carl Albert. 6-0 (1)

Defeated OKC Southeast, 63-14. David Oku rushed for three touchdowns for an easy night against Southeast. Carl Albert completed 12-of-13 passes as a team for 214 yards and three touchdowns. Daytawion Lowe added a 60-yard punt return for a score to pace the Titans.

 

2. Lawton MacArthur. 6-0 (4)

Defeated Duncan, 54-7. Austin Giles threw for 276 yards and three touchdowns as the Highlanders had a surprisingly easy time against the ninth-ranked Demons. Giles added 14 tackles and a rushing touchdown for MacArthur.

 

3. Guthrie. 6-0 (2)

Defeated El Reno, 51-7. Kent McDonald hauled in two touchdown receptions for the Bluejays. Kye Staley rushed for a touchdown, threw two touchdown passes, and added a 93-yard touchdown reception to his resume' in the victory for Guthrie.

 

4. Tulsa East Central. 6-0 (3)

Defeated Bishop Kelley, 31-20. Kenny Session rushed for 143 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns to lead the Cardinals to their 24th straight regular season victory. Reno Conchitias added 110 rushing yards and added a 15-yard touchdown reception for East Central.

 

5. McAlester. 6-0 (5)

Defeated Durant, 49-34. Herman Walters rushed for 209 yards and four touchdowns and also added a 90-yard kickoff return for a score in the victory. Justin Klusak rushed for 105 yards and completed 11-of-16 passes for 92 yards to pace the Buffaloes.

 

6. Ada. 4-2 (10)

Defeated Bixby, 6-3. A Michael Roberts 55-yard touchdown run was all the Cougars would need in a mild upset victory over Bixby.

 

7. Bixby. 4-2 (6)

Lost to Ada, 6-3. Bixby fell for the first time this season to Class 5A competition. Will Maxwell's 26-yard field goal was the only points the Spartans could muster in a losing effort.

 

8. Shawnee. 3-3 (8)

Defeated Tulsa McLain, 19-0. Quarterback Tucker Brown rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Wolves to the victory. Nick Carter booted two field goals for Shawnee.

 

9. Coweta. 5-1 (NR)

Defeated Catoosa, 45-14. Dillon Vaughn had 310 total yards and four touchdowns in a statement victory over Catoosa.

 

10. Duncan. 5-1 (7)

Lost to Lawton MacArthur, 54-7.

Western Heights quarterback JoJo Durham scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to give the Jets a 35-32 come from behind victory over Chickasha. It was Durham's third touchdown run of the night. Chickasha quarterback Wyatt Kinnamon threw for three touchdowns and added another on the ground for the Chicks. Ardmore two touchdown runs from Dominick Williams, who later drilled Stanton St. Clair on a halfback pass for a score as the Tigers defeated Altus, 20-6. Northwest Classen surpassed its win total from last season with a 42-0 victory on Thursday night over Capitol Hill at historic Taft Stadium in Oklahoma City.

Brandon McElhaney rushed for two touchdowns to help Noble down Harrah, 27-7. McElhaney opened the scoring with a 70-yard run in the first quarter before adding a 17-yard run later on. Woodward moved to 3-0 in district play with a 51-6 victory over John Marshall. Woodward ran for 433 yards in the victory.
