Welcome to the “Golden Age” of high school football winning streaks.
The sport’s two longest streaks of success have been snapped within the last five seasons. California’s De La Salle saw its legendary, 151-game streak end in 2004, while Independence of Charlotte, N.C., was dropped in 2007 after piling up 109-straight wins.
The third longest is alive and well in Mississippi as South Panola High School will look to expand on its 75-game win streak this fall. In all, 16 schools will enter the season attempting to defend streaks of 30 games or more.
1. South Panola, Miss. – 75 Games
The Tigers haven’t lost since the 2002 5A championship game – a seven-point setback to Wayne County. In the subsequent five seasons, South Panola has gone unblemished in collecting five state titles at Mississippi’s highest level of play. The Tigers have defeated opponents by nearly 28 points per game during that span and produced a number of top-flight college prospects, including Darius Barksdale, Chris Strong (Mississippi) and Derek Pegues (Mississippi State). Head coach Lance Pogue enters his second year at the Batesville school after taking over from Ricky Woods.
