Coach: Jerry Bird.
Lettermen R/L: 18/25.
2009: 2-8/0-7 district.
Starters returning O/D: 4/5.
Players to watch: WR Garrett Rhoades (6-3, 185, 4.6), OLB Reid Rose (6-0, 180, 4.7).
Top juniors: WR Michael Keeton (5-11, 173, 4.7), QB Riley Davis (6-1, 187, 4.5).
Top sophomores: RB/LB K.J. Evans (5-10, 170, 4.7).
Other prospects: DT Blake Holley, OG Russell Sharp, SS David Bryant, LB Colin Elrod, OT Dusty Terry, C Garrett Smit, WR David Castro.
2010 notes: The Owls offense will look to the air with WRs Keeton (47-453, 6 TDs) and Rhoades (31-400, 3 TDs) returning, though how successful the offense is will partly hinge on how QB Davis adjusts to moving over from DB (37 tackles, 3 INTs). Perhaps Davis' experience reading QBs will help him transition quickly. The OL technically returns two starters (Terry and Smit), though OG Sharp would've been the third had an injury not cost him all but two games last fall. LB Rose (75 tackles) headlines the defensive returnees. Having a "second year in the system," coach Bird said, will lead to improvement. But with a district that includes Everman and two 5A dropdowns, earning a playoff berth will be a challenge. Maybe a talented group of sophomores that is already showing promise could be the eventual answer for Bird and the Owls.
