New Look, Same Result at Southlake Carroll
ÿ
With just six returning starters entering the season, Southlake Carroll's foes in the Texas 5A ranks were hoping the Dragon's run of dominance might be put on pause in 2006.
ÿ
Those hopes were dashed Friday night, as Southlake Carroll (1-0) drubbed Lake Highlands (0-2), 49-13, tacking on consecutive win No. 33.
ÿ
Dodge's son, Riley, made his starting debut at quarterback by combining for 340 passing and rushing yards to go along with five touchdowns. Running back Tre' Newton chipped in 176 yards on the ground.
ÿ
The road will get tougher for the Dragons this week, as Louisiana power Evangel Christian (0-1) comes calling in a Thursday night game. The Eagles kept it close against another Texas 5A power, Lufkin, in a 24-14 loss Sept. 1

Notre Dame-Sherman Oaks Stops Canyon
ÿ
With teams like St. Bonaventure, Crespi, Hart, and Valencia dotting Canyon's (Calif.) 2006 schedule, running the table was probably a longshot.
ÿ
But the brutal lineup caught up with the Cowboys (1-1) sooner than expected Friday night, as Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks (2-0) stunned the defending Southern Section champions, 18-17, on their home field.
ÿ
Canyon looked to be on its way to a 13th-straight victory after leading 17-3 at halftime, but wide receiver Mike Stanton hauled in a 30-yard touchdown pass from Dayne Crist with just over a minute remaining, bringing the visiting Knights to within a point at 17-16.
ÿ
Instead of going for the tie, Notre Dame head coach Kevin Rooney elected to go for two and the win. Again, it was the junior quarterback Crist finding the senior, Stanton, in the end zone for the two-point conversion and an improbable comeback victory.
ÿ
Canyon hosts St. Bonaventure (2-0) next week, a team loaded with Division I-A prospects and coming off lopsided wins over Hart and St. Paul.

McCoy Watch
ÿ
Can anybody stop Matewan's Paul McCoy? The West Virginia, small-school sensation was at it again Thursday night in a 66-16 romp over Williamson High, racking up 229 yards on 24 carries, including six touchdowns.
ÿ
Through three games in 2006, McCoy has 1,072 yards on the ground and 16 touchdowns. The 5-9, 170-pound senior has another 201 return yards, and has chipped in on the Matewan defense with 15 tackles and an interception.

Jenks Outlasts Tulsa Union
ÿ
The MaxPreps USA Football Tour was on hand at the University of Tulsa's Skelly Stadium Friday night as Jenks outlasted Tulsa Union, 9-6.
ÿ
The victory - achieved in front of more than 24,000 fans - marks Jenks' third-straight regular season win in the series, arguably Oklahoma's most heated gridiron rivalry.
ÿ
Trojan quarterback Mark Ginther gave his team a 9-0 lead in the first quarter with an 80-yard touchdown run, but it was the Jenks' defense that held against a furious late-game rally by Union.
ÿ
The Redskins pulled to within three points with just over five minutes remaining in the contest, but were denied an apparent game-winning touchdown in the final seconds by a penalty.
ÿ
"That was a huge call," Union head coach Kevin Wright told the The Oklahoman. "It's like I told the official, `It's either a great call or a game-changing call.' I didn't see it, I was watching the coverage. I think the fullback moved a little bit. It was so close."
ÿ
Warren Central: No. 1?
ÿ
While first-year Tulsa Union head coach Kevin Wright has struggled out of the gate with an 0-2 start, his old team, Warren Central, Ind., is starting to look like a legitimate national No. 1.
ÿ
The Warriors, Indiana's No. 1-ranked 5A school, smoked the state's No. 2, Ben Davis, 76-7, behind six touchdowns and 243 rushing yards by star back Darren Evans.
ÿ
"The size and speed they have, it's just unbelievable," Davis head coach Tom Allen said to The Indianapolis Star. "It's scary trying to stop them."
ÿ
Evans scored on three consecutive carries in the second quarter, pushing Warren Central to a 49-7 lead at halftime.
ÿ
The Warriors were pegged at No. 10 in the MaxPreps Preseason National Top 25, but after outscoring their first four opponents by a combined tally of 239-47, it's safe to say Tutsie's team in playing as well as anybody in the country.

Team of the Week: St. Xavier, Ohio
ÿ
St. Xavier, Ohio's defending Division I state champion, won its 18th-straight game in a 10-7 slugfest against St. Edward of Lakewood Saturday night in Cincinnati. The win gives the Bombers a 3-0 mark headed into next week's showdown with national No. 1, Lakeland, Fla., at the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge.
ÿ
St. Xavier got just 62 yards from star running back Darius Ashley, but a blocked punt and a pair of interceptions kept the Eagles out of striking distance until late in the fourth quarter.
ÿ
Credit both St. Xavier and St. Edward, who next week meet Lakeland and Springdale, Ark., respectively, for putting together two of the most daunting schedules in the country.
ÿ
Max Performer of the Week
ÿ
Randle Affholter, Quarterback, Ellensburg, Wash.
For the second-straight week, a quarterback from the state of Washington is the MaxPreps' Max Performer of the Week. Ellensburg senior quarterback Randle Affholter completed 26 of 36 passes for 506 yards and five touchdowns in a 44-31 win over Wapato. Affholter, the son of Ellensburg head coach Randy Affholter, has produced 815 passing yards and nine touchdown passes in two games.
ÿ
Prosser's Kellen Moore was honored last week for his 407-yard, seven-touchdown performance against Southridge. Moore and Affholter will square off later this season in a game that will likely crown a league champion.
ÿ
Looking Ahead
ÿ
It's finally here. Saying the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge could be the biggest two days in high school football history isn't hyperbole.
ÿ
Never before have 18 programs with so much tradition, history, and talent been brought together in a single event.
ÿ
The MaxPreps USA Football Tour will highlight St. Xavier's clash with Lakeland, but that game is just one of nine that will help shape the national outlook as the season progresses.
