CHARLOTTE, N.C. - the Panthers had a big 28-point first quarter on Saturday, sealing a 52-22 victory over East Mecklenburg (Charlotte, N.C.).
Providence scored on a touchdown run by
Giovanni Gonzales, a touchdown pass by
Frankie Cook to
Jeremy Spencer, a
Caleb York touchdown run and a touchdown run by Gonzales in the quarter.
After taking the lead on a touchdown run by Gonzales in the first quarter, PHS was up 35-8 at the half.
The Panthers grew their lead to 33 points entering the fourth quarter. Providence scored two times in the third, including once on a
Brian Mattar touchdown run.
A 28-point first quarter set the table for PHS, who coasted the rest of the way for the victory.
Providence's standout player in the win was Gonzales. The senior running back ran for two touchdowns.
Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 31-18 win for Providence.
The victory was a step in the right direction for PHS, which was coming off a 34-21 defeat at the hands of Hough in its previous game.
In a non-conference game next week Providence (1-1) takes on Porter Ridge, and East Mecklenburg (0-2) will go up against North Mecklenburg also in a non-conference game.
