The Jets beat Buckley 78-69 on Saturday to capture their third straight Michigan Class D state championship and extend the nation's longest high school basketball win streak to 83 games.
Senior Jason Whitens
dropped 23 points in the victory. The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 23.9 points per game this year and powered the Jets to a spotless 28-0 record. North Central went 108-1 in Whitens' four seasons in the program.
Whitens is also a star on the gridiron, where he threw for over 2,500 yards and 44 touchdowns while running for 960 yards and 22 touchdowns as a senior. The North Central football team averaged 66 points per game en route to a 13-0 record and state title in 2016.
Back to the hardwood, North Central won its first 23 games this season by double digits and 21 of those by 20 points or more. The team's last loss came March 18, 2014 to Cedarville in the Class D state playoffs.
