Week six on the high school gridirons of the Texas Panhandle and South Plains played out as predicted - no real surprises.
ÿ
2-5A Amarillo High at 2-5A San Angelo Central
ÿ
Amarillo High's bus rolled into San Angelo Stadium and the Sandies rolled over the San Angelo Central Bobcats, 31-13, on the longest road trip that any 5A team in the state must endure - a five hour bus trip from Amarillo to San Angelo and another five back - all in the same day.
ÿ
Two kickoffs by Sandie Brett Owens had so much hangtime that the Amarillo coverage team recovered both - each for scores on those possessions. Both Bobcat failures to field Sandie kicks came in a second quarter of 24-unanswered points by the Sandies.
ÿ
San Angelo is now 3-4 0verall and 1-1 in district heading into this week's game at Amarillo Tascosa (the 10-hour round trip in reverse). Amarillo High is 4-2 for the season and 2-0 in district - a sure lock for a playoff berth.
ÿ
2-5A Lubbock Monterey at 2-5A Amarillo Tascosa
ÿ
Tascosa Rebel 2005 all-district running back Anthony Scott opened the scoring on the second play from scrimmage - a 76-yard sweep. Rebel wide receiver Tyson Dennis closed out the scoring late in the fourth quarter with a seven-yard touchdown reception from junior quarterback Brian Strouhal. If it were not for those pesky 42 Monterey points in between, the Rebels would have had a good night.
ÿ
The Lubbock Monterey Plainsmen showed a stunned Amarillo crowd exactly why they are 6-1 overall and taking dead aim at the district 2-5A crown with a 42-14 victory, delivered by a flex bone offensive clinic.
ÿ
Monterey has a plethora of looks, formations, and weapons on offense. The Plainsmen rushed for 423 yards and rolled up 468 yards total offense. Six Monterey players scored, including starting quarterback Joel Lira who ran for 129 yards himself.
ÿ
After Scott's opening sweep touchdown, Tascosa fumbled twice, Strouhal was intercepted twice, and Rebel special teams muffed a punt and botched a pooch kickoff for 14 Monterey points.
ÿ
Plainsmen backup quarterback Justin Hernandez alternated offensive series with Lira during the second and third quarters while scoring on a 21-yard touchdown run for a total of 70 yards rushing. Monterey improves to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in district after losing to Lubbock Coronado last week.
ÿ
Remember, however, that Monterey is the only 2-5A team (Amarillo and Amarillo Tascosa both lost) to beat mighty Odessa Permian in non-district play. Tascosa falls to 4-3 for the season and is 1-1 in district play. Monterey plays 2-5A Lubbock High. Tascosa hosts 2-5A San Angelo Central.
ÿ
2-5A Lubbock Coronado vs. 2-5A Lubbock High
ÿ
Coronado, coming off an upset victory over 2-5A Lubbock Monterey last week, continued its domination of 5A Lubbock schools by shutting out Lubbock High, 19-0.
ÿ
Coronado is 4-2 overall and a perfect 2-0 in district - tied with Amarillo High for the district lead which will be determined this week when they travel to Amarillo to face the Sandies. Lubbock descends to the 2-5A cellar with a 3-4 and 0-2 record. They play a spirited and potent Monterey this week.
ÿ
3-4A Amarillo Palo Duro at 3-4A Canyon Randall
ÿ
Two Randall point-after attempts, a missed kick in the first quarter, and a failed two-point conversion in the fourth were the edge the Palo Duro Dons needed to fend off a late Randall surge for a 21-19 victory at West Texas A&M's Kimbrough Memorial Stadium in Canyon.
ÿ
Randall quarterback Mark Glawe's three-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Schilmoeller opened scoring, but the extra point failed. Late in the fourth quarter, with Palo Duro leading, 21-13, Raider running back Blake Bonner ran for a 23-yard touchdown only to have the two-point conversion fail.
ÿ
The Dons earned their first win since an overtime victory over Clovis Sept. 16. The Dons victory over Randall moves them to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in district. The Raiders fall to 2-3 and 1-1.
ÿ
3-4A Pampa at 3-4A Hereford
ÿ
The Hereford Whitefaces stampede the Pampa Harvesters, 48-13.
ÿ
It looked even in the first quarter with each offense scoring a touchdown. Then Hereford doled out 35-unanswered points. Hereford quarterback Casey Page rolled up 310 yards total offense. Pampa running back Michael Robinson scored the Harvesters only touchdown with an 80-yard first quarter run.
ÿ
Hereford takes sole possession of the district 3-4A lead at 6-1 overall and 2-0 in district, virtually locking up a playoff berth as 3-4A's only unbeaten team. Pampa, under first-year coach Andy Cavalier, falls to 3-4 and 1-1.
ÿ
3-4A Amarillo Caprock at 3-4A Dumas
ÿ
The winless Dumas Demons, hosting the winless Caprock Longhorns, scored 28 second-half points to vanquish a 10-6 Caprock halftime lead.
ÿ
Demon quarterback Shayne Johnson passed for 100 yards and two touchdowns to Nathan Ellison and Alfredo Hernandez. Dumas improves to 1-6 and 1-1 while Caprock remains winless at 0-7 and 0-2.
