The 7th Annual MaxPreps Football Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard made a stop at Calhoun HS in Calhoun, GA on Thursday, January 26th. It was a time to recognize the 102nd ranked team in the nation, the 15-0 Georgia AA State Champion Calhoun Yellow Jackets. It was the first state championship for Calhoun since 1952, and they defeated a tough Buford team who had beaten Calhoun the previous three years in the championship game.
The entire student body was released to the auditorium for this special awards program. A variety of music was being played as the students made their way to their seats. School principal Greg Green acted as the Master of Ceremonies for the program, and introduced MaxPreps Representative Melissa Lee. She described how MaxPreps makes its selections, and reminded the audience why Calhoun was a worthy recipient of this award, and one of only 50 teams to be recognized nationwide on the football tour. She introduced Georgia Army National Guard Sergeant First Class Mike Bohannon, who shared how the Yellow Jacket football team accomplished what they did this year by teamwork, dedication, commitment and excellence, and congratulated the team on a great season. He then presented the Army National Guard national ranking trophy or the "Minuteman" to Head Coach Hal Lamb to a rousing ovation from the packed auditorium. The entire team came to the stage with their new commemorative Tour of Champion T-shirts on, as Coach Lamb graciously accepted the trophy. Two local media representatives were on hand as well to capture the excitement of this special time for the local community.
The students, players, coaches and faculty members were thrilled to be part of this day and many made a special effort to thank MaxPreps and the Army National Guard for this great honor.
