Safeties are the last line of defense on the football field and many times they are the coaches on the field. Beyond being ballhawks, these guys also deliver some big hits.
Here are the nation's 10 top safety recruits from the Class of 2018, according to
247Sports.com. Seven of them come from either Texas or California.
1. B.J. Foster, Angleton (Texas)The physical 6-foot-1, 188-pounder is considered the 16th top recruit in the country overall. He's already committed to Texas even with 25 other offers.
2. Tyreke Johnson, Trinity Christian Academy (Jacksonville, Fla.)The 6-1, 191-pounder has yet to commit despite his 5-star ranking and 25 offers that include front-runners Florida, Florida State, Ohio State, UCLA and Alabama. Johnson is ranked the No. 19 recruit overall.
3. Jaiden Woodbey St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.)Bosco, the defending California Open Division champion, has made a nice connection between the Southern California school and Ohio State. Woodbey has already committed to Urban Meyer after the team's star offensive lineman, All-American Wyatt Davis, signed there last year. The 6-2, 204-pounder Woodbey hits hard, leading an active and talented secondary.
4. Caden Sterns, Steele (Cibolo, Texas)The nation's No. 42 recruit overall has already committed to Texas. The 6-1, 192-pounder leads a team that has won 14 games each of the past two seasons, thanks in big part to Sterns.
5. Derrik Allen, Lassiter (Marietta, Ga.)The rugged 6-2, 211-pounder has already committed to Notre Dame on Feb. 13. Ranked the No. 51 recruit overall, Allen has 35 offers, including his home state Georgia and Ohio State.
6. Leon O'Neal Jr., Cypress Springs (Cypress, Texas)The 6-1, 190-pounder has 33 offers and committed June 2 to Texas A&M. Ranked the 66th top recruit overall, O'Neal is one of five 4-star commits to the Aggies. He averaged 10.6 tackles per game last season for Cypress Springs.
7. Steve Stephens, Edison (Fresno, Calif.)The 6-foot, 185-pounder has already committed to Oregon, doing so on April 30. Stephens has offers from Cal, Arizona State, Colorado, Boise State, LSU, USC and Notre Dame, among others.
8. Joshua Proctor, Owasso (Okla.)The 6-2, 190-pounder is ranked the 88th-best recruit in the country overall. He has 13 offers but committed to Ohio State on April 15.
9. DeMarvion Overshown, Arp (Texas)The 6-4, 200-pounder committed to Texas on May 31. Besides a very cool name, the combo safety and linebacker is a playmaker. He had 173 tackles, seven sacks and three interceptions last season.
10. Aashari Crosswell, Long Beach Poly (Calif.)Only the second of the 10 who has yet to commit, the 6-1, 185-pounder has 22 offers but most believe he'll choose USC. Other possible suitors are Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn and Michigan. Crosswell had 10 interceptions and 106 tackles during three previous years at Hawkins (Los Angeles) before transferring to Long Beach Poly..
