The postseason can be a treacherous place for ranked teams with every underdog gunning to knock off its nationally-recognized foe.
Taking the fall this week was No. 1 Olympia (Orlando, Fla.), which was unable to solve the slants of sophomore hurler Kyle Marsh in an 8-1 loss to Spruce Creek
. The loss ended a 29-game win streak for the Titans and eliminated them from the Florida 8A state playoffs.
With the loss, Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.) moves up to the No. 1 spot with Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) No. 2. While Mater Dei was the champion of the National High School Invitational last march, it finished second to Orange Lutheran in Trinity League play.
Olympia was hardly the only team to fall, however. Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) almost found itself out of the postseason after losing a 9-8 decision to Arbor View in the second round of the Sunset Regionals. Fortunately for the Gaels the tournament is double elimination. Bishop Gorman then won five straight to claim the title and advance to this week's state championship tournament.
Defending Xcellent 25 No. 1 Broken Arrow also fell victim to the upset bug, as did fellow Oklahoma power Owasso. Edmond North, a team with a 21-15 record when the playoffs began, knocked off the Rams in the first round and then topped the defending state champion Tigers
in the finals for its first state title.
One key matchup to watch this week features a pair of Xcellent 25 teams from Florida. Jesuit (Tampa) and American Heritage (Plantation) meet in the semifinals of the 5A state playoffs Thursday.
