Writer, producer and director Franklin Martin pulled together an all-star ensemble – including Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw and Reggie Bush of the New Orleans Saints – to assist in the documentary “Walking on Dead Fish,” the story of the East St. John High School (La Place, La.) football team post-Hurricane Katrina.
But Bradshaw and Bush aren’t the focal point of the film, shot in 2005 as the New Orleans area attempted to recover from the devastation of the costliest natural disaster in United States’ history.
East St. John returned to the football field less than three weeks after Katrina made landfall amidst flooding, 100-degree heat, scarce electricity, food and water, as well as a school bursting at the seams with 450 displaced students.
“The only thing that could stop football in the South was a hurricane, and even then the storm ended up pulling the communities together,” executive producer and narrator Terry Bradshaw said. “If you don’t shed a tear, you’re not right.”
The film premiered Sept. 5 in New Orleans and opens nationwide today.
