The end of the season for most of the teams in the state brought out a flurry of 400-yard passers, let by El Capitan's Tanner Rust, who threw for nearly 600 yards to set a new San Diego Section record. Rust's effort and seven other 400-yard games highlight this week's Top Performances.
Passing
Corey Nielsen, Gahr, closed out the regular season with this best effort yet, throwing for a season-high 461 yards and two touchdowns while completing 18 of 25 passes in a 35-14 win over Downey. Gahr had four receivers over 100 yards in the game, including Aaron Bradley, four catches for 129 yards, Deondre Powell, seven catches for 106 yards, Tavoy Moore, four receptions for 102 yards, and Shaan Johnson, three catches for 124 yards.
Andy Magee, Chadwick, had close to 500 total yards of offense as he completed 32 of 55 passes for 411 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran 11 times for 78 yards, but the Dolphins fell to Rio Hondo Prep 40-19. George Mavredakis and Tim Watson each had 101 yards receiving for Chadwick with Watson catching nine passes and Mavredakis grabbing five.
Jamie Jensen, Gilroy, lifted his team past San Benito, 57-27, by completing 25 of 34 passes for 486 yards and a whopping eight touchdowns. According to Cal-Hi Sports, the TD mark ties the section record held by John Paye and Jim McKinley, both of Menlo School. Danny Contreras caught seven pases for 262 yards while Sean Hale grabbed eight passes for 115 yards. Contreras had four of the TD catches while Hale had two.
Cary Grossart, Folsom, had his best outing of the season with 422 yards and five touchdowns in a 57-22 win over Florin. He completed 19 of 26 passes in the win. Joe Brinkmann caught eight passes for 164 yards.
Matt Barkley, Mater Dei, lifted the Monarchs to a 31-13 win over Servite with 16 completions in 25 attempts for 348 yards and three scores. Robbie Boyer caught five passes for 134 yards while Andrew Abbott caught five passes for 141 yards.
Tanner Rust, El Capitan, set a new San Diego Section record, according to the section record book, with 597 yards in a 46-14 win over Santana. Rust completed 25 of 38 passes for 7 touchdowns. Tila Case caught 10 passes for 285 yards to tie the section record. Phillip Cook added five catches for 151 yards and three touchdowns.
Jamie McGee, Sage Hill, lifted his team to a 60-37 win over Capistrano Valley Christian by throwing for 435 yards and five touchdowns. He completed 19 of 29 passes and also ran for 57 yards on four carries. Preston Oklejas caught nine passes for 215 yards and three touchdowns while Nick Witte added five catches for 165 yards.
Daniel Young, Los Altos, cut loose for 456 yards passing in a 48-21 win over Santa Clara. He connected on 22 of 29 passes for five touchdowns. Kenneth Penterman caught seven passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns.
Josh Bowen, Weston Ranch, completed 16 of 30 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns in a 45-28 win over Sierra.
Alex Salter, Stagg, paced the Delta Kings to a 35-28 win over Tokay by completing 24 of 36 passes for 376 yards and three touchdowns. Joseph Washington caught 11 passes for 170 yards whie Eric Mahan had 10 catches for 178 yards.
David Glass, Analy, fired 7 completions in 14 attempts for 226 yards in a 33-21 loss to Healdsburg.
Robert Fuller, Arroyo Valley, guided the Hawks to a 62-7 win over Pacific with 17 completions in 27 attempts for 354 yards and four touchdowns. Donyale George caught five passes for 145 yards and Devon Collins grabbed six passes for 112 yards.
Ken Johnston, Carmel, threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns while completing 22 of 40 passes in a 22-19 loss to Pacific Grove.
Darius Banks, Culver City, guided the Centaurs to a 10-0 season with a 31-21 win over Beverly Hills. He completed 14 of 26 passes for 248 yards and two touchdowns. The three-year starter is closing in on 9,000 career passing yards with 8,670 heading into this week's playoff opener.
Chris Bradley, Modesto, notched 260 yards on 14 of 33 passing with two touchdowns in a 42-16 win over Johansen.
Brendan Chambers, Saddleback Valley Christian, completed just 14 of 20 passes for 179 yards, but also ran 28 times for 274 yards and five touchdowns in a 52-26 win over Fairmont Prep.
Alex Beaton, Western Christian, finished the season with 243 yards on 14 of 22 passing in a 38-7 win over Arrowhead Christian.
Anthony Cukar, Del Mar, led his team to an undefeated 10-0 season by completing 10 of 18 passes for 255 yards in a 41-34 win over Westmont.
Jesse Diaz, Roosevelt, led the Rough Riders to a 34-21 win over South Gate with 363 yards passing (19 of 25) and three touchdowns.
Dylan Finch, Golden Valley, helped the Bulldogs defeat Selma 38-28 in their playoff opener with 277 yards on 17 of 27 passing.
Justin Flores, Sierra Vista, threw for 261 yards and two touchdowns (13 of 20) in a 42-13 loss to Duarte.
Steven Batista, Wilson, paced the Mules to a 27-6 win over Lincoln by throwing for 305 yards on 19 of 30 passing with three touchdowns.
Cannon Bernarding, Westmont, outdueled Del Mar's Anthony Cukar, completing 21 of 41 passes for 321 yards, but Cukar's Del Mar team won 41-34.
Jordan Thomas, Canyon, led the Comanches to a 42-21 win over El Modena by completing 11 of 17 passes for 262 yards and three touchdowns.
Doug Shumway, Agoura, ran 13 times for 96 yards and also completed 16 of 20 passes for 248 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-3 win over Calabasas.
Jake Holtz, Millikan, threw for 237 yards and three touchdowns (11 of 20) in a 38-0 win over Cabrillo.
Rushing
Adrian Pacheco, Selma, the state's leading rusher had his second 300-yard performance of the season with 304 yards on 45 carries and three touchdowns in a 38-28 playoff loss to Golden Valley. Pacheco finishes the season with 2,527 yards and 30 touchdowns.
Ily Lopez, Avenal, in a game that went unreported from last week, Lopez rambled for a state-high 456 yards on 23 carries with seven touchdowns in a 76-28 win over Kings Christian. In two games against Kings Christian this year, Lopez ran for 859 yards and 14 touchdowns. Avenal did not reach the playoffs, so Lopez ends the season with 2,406 yards and 34 touchdowns.
Nick Kalpin, Los Gatos, concluded league play with 246 yards on 33 carries with five touchdowns in a 35-0 win over Mountain View.
Deonte Williams, Pleasant Grove, led the Eagles to their eighth straight win by rushing for 247 yards on 30 carries with four touchdowns in a 39-19 win over Monterey Trail.
Jontell Reedom, Tulare Union, kept the Redskins unbeaten at 11-0 with 303 yards on 28 carries and five touchdowns in a 62-23 playoff win over North Bakersfield.
Ray Holley, El Modena, posted 283 yards on 30 carries and two scores in a 42-21 loss to Canyon of Anaheim.
Chris Harris, Duarte, bolted for 260 yards on 13 carries with three touchdowns in a 42-13 win over Sierra Vista. He also caught four passes for 92 yards and a score.
Givonannie Dixon, Reseda, picked up 247 yards on 34 carries with three touchdowns in a wild 48-43 loss to Monroe.
Carl Winston, Serra, ran for 227 yards on 20 carries with two touchdowns in a 37-7 win over St. Bernard.
Carey Johnson, Del Campo, lifted the Cougars over El Camino, 37-7, with 235 yards on 19 carries and three touchdowns.
Roger Rose, Gunderson, completed the season with his best game, rushing for 250 yards on 18 carries with two touchdowns in an 18-10 win over Silver Creek.
Tim Gilmore, Wilson, cruised for 293 yards on 32 carries in a 37-25 win over Rowland. He also scored three times for the Wildcats.
Ebahn Feathers, Washington, possibly the most dynamic player in the state rushed for 224 yards on eight carries, giving him three 200-yard rushing games this year to go with four 200-yard passing games. He scored three rushing touchdowns in a 62-14 win over Madera South and threw a touchdown pass.
Anthony Biasi, Casa Grande, finished strong for the Gauchos, rushing for 244 yards on 31 carries and three scores in a 27-14 win over Sacred Heart Cathedral.
David Trifeletti, Oak Ridge, had one of his best outings of the season with 237 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries in a 33-7 win over Christian Brothers.
A.J. Springer, Miller, bounced back from a loss to Redlands East Valley last week by beating Eisenhower 41-14. Springer had 216 yards rushing on 17 carries and also completed 5 of 10 passes for 150 yards.
Travis Driskell, Mt. Pleasant, led the Cardinals to a 43-37 win over Santa Teresa with 263 yards on 39 carries and four touchdowns.
