Following is the sixth in a series of stories previewing the upcoming football season in California. Today's previews include the leagues that play in the Central Coast Section. Next - San Diego Section.
CENTRAL COAST SECTION
De Anza League
Palo Alto (12-2, 6-0) will be hard pressed to duplicate its outstanding season of a year ago. The Vikings lose QB Nick Goodspeed (2,089 yards) as well as RB Will Frazier (1,113 yards) from a team that went to the CIF Division 2 Bowl Game. That should allow Los Gatos (10-3, 5-1) to move into the favorite role in the DeAnza League. The Wildcats return leading passer Andrew Gomez (1,932 yards) and rusher Nick Kalpin (1,294 yards) as well as defensive standout Kiko Alonso. Milpitas (9-4, 3-3) should also be solid, especially on defense where Steven Fanua, the league defensive MVP with 220 tackles, returns for his junior year.

El Camino League
Los Altos (10-2, 6-0) should be solid on both sides of the ball this year with all-leaguers returning on both sides. Daniel Young is the top returning passer in the league after throwing for 995 yards last year. Meanwhile LB Mitch McGillis and DB Ben Kohl will lead the Eagle defense. Lynbrook (4-6, 1-5) has the top two-way performer in Scott Day. A solid running back on offense, Day was also the league defensive MVP at linebacker. Saratoga (6-4, 5-1) and Fremont (5-5, 4-2) will also be in the mix along with Monta Vista (6-4, 3-3). Fremont has the top returning running back in Pat Washington and defensive back in Kenney Pope.

Mission Trail League
Pacific Grove (10-3, 6-0) no longer has all-state linebacker John Tyndall, but they do have a number of other standouts back from last year's championship team. Daniel Connors will look to improve on his passing total of 1,506 yards from last year while Ian Hesse will try for a second straight 1,000 yard rushing season. The Breakers are also strong in the secondary where all-leaguers Tommy Merchak and Andrew Sublett return. Carmel (5-4, 3-3) will likely make a move this year thanks to the return of Ken Johnston at quarterback. As a sophomore, Johnston threw for 2,342 yards last year. Look for Greenfield (5-5, 3-3) to also improve behind running back Jesus Briseno (1,201 yards).
Team to Beat: Pacific Grove Breakers
Top MVP Candidate: Daniel Connors, Pacific Grove
Players to Watch: Jesus Briseno, Greenfield, RB, All-League, Mercury News all-area honorable mention, 143 carries, 1,201 yards, 16 TDs; Ian Hesse, Pacific Grove, RB, All-League, Mercury News all-area honorable mention, 116 carries, 1,045 yards, 14 TDs; Matt Laredo, Pacific Grove, G, All-League; Noe Alvarez, Greenfield, DL, All-League; Tommy Merchak, Pacific Grove, DB, Jr, All-League, 6 Int; Andrew Sublett, Pacific Grove, S, Jr, All-League, 7 Int; James Barbree, King City, S, All-League, 18 catches, 406 yards, 4 TDs; Ken Johnston, Carmel, QB, Mercury News all-area honorable mention, Cal-Hi Sports All-State Sophomores, 149-262, 2,342 yards, 27 TDs; Daniel Connors, Pacific Grove, QB, 96-158, 1,506 yards, 15 TDs; Alex Martinez, Carmel, WR, 33 catches, 416 yards, 5 TDs; Andrew Melendrez, Carmel, WR, Jr., 19 catches, 370 yards, 3 TDs; Robert Garduno, King City, DB, 5 Int; William Perocchi, Stevenson, QB, 59-155, 907 yards, 13 TDs.
Monterey Bay League
Seaside (12-1, 5-0) faces the imposing task of replacing Mason Foster, Reggie Johnson, Raul Gomez and Jeremy Haynes from last year's Central Coast Section championship team. That won't be easy and it could open the door for other MBL teams to take over the top spot. However most of the other league teams were also hurt by graduation, leaving Seaside as the top dog until someone knocks them out of first place. Monte Vista Christian (4-5-1, 2-3) has an outstanding set of receivers in Matthew Griffin and Colin Hogan, but will have to find a replacement for QB Josh Blanton.
Team to Beat: Seaside Spartans
Top MVP Candidate: Matthew Griffin, Monte Vista Christian
Players to Watch: Michael Olivio, Monterey, OL, All-League; Deonti Gordon, Seaside, DB, All-League, All-Monterey; Matthew Griffin, Monte Vista Christian, WR, All-League, Mercury News all-area honorable mention, 57 catches, 1,046 yards, 6 TDs; Race Nelson, Pajaro Valley, RB, All-League, 134 carries, 570 yards, 8 TDs; Colin Hogan, Monte Vista Christian, WR, 39 catches, 862 yards, 9 TDs; Daniel Odell, North Monterey County, QB, 45-93, 557 yards, 4 TDs; Ryan Saucedo, Watsonville, QB, 47-107, 754 yards, 7 TDs.

If you are searching for the most talented team in the Central Coast Section, your search is over. The Oak Grove Eagles (11-1-1, 7-0) are loaded in the backfield with returning league MVP Nevin Gardner (2,054 yards) and all-leaguer Stacy Long. The Eagles also might have one of the best secondaries in the state with rising junior Jabari Carr and seniors Mike Estrada and Malik Brown. The trio combined for 15 interceptions and 269 tackles last year.
Team to Beat: Oak Grove Eagles
Top MVP Candidate: Nevin Gardner, Oak Grove

Peninsula Bay League
The Aragon Dons (8-3, 6-1), with MVP candidate Seta Pohahau in the backfield, are still the favorites, but they will get a heavy push from Menlo Atherton (8-3, 5-2), which returns the pass-catch combo of Troy McCabe and Sam Knapp and defensive standout Latani Moi Moi.

Peninsula Ocean League
The Menlo Knights (9-2, 6-1) and Mills Vikings (7-4, 6-1) tied for first place last year and will likely battle it out for the league title again this year. The Knights no longer have Andrew Dixon (2,758 yards) at QB, but Menlo almost always finds a quality replacement to throw the ball. Mills, meanwhile, returns QB James Knecht, RB Josh Ulkilifi and LB Jonathon Castillo.
Team to Beat: Menlo School Knights

Santa Cruz Coast League
San Lorenzo Valley (4-5-2, 4-1) was the surprise team in league play, going winless in the preseason, but tying for first place in league play with Scotts Valley (9-2, 4-1). SLV returns the league's top QB in Ian McGinnis along with all-league linebacker Matt Davis. Scotts Valley has multi-talented AJ Corbella, and it has already played one game in Hawaii last week.

Quarterback Ricky Battipede also returns to lead the offense. Santa Teresa (9-3, 6-1) is experienced in the backfield with RB Alonzo Parks and QB Mitch Bowman back in the fold. The Palma Cheiftans (10-2, 6-0) just missed out on a chance to play in the CIF Division 2 Bowl Game, falling to Palo Alto 41-38 in the Central Coast Section finals. The bulk of that team is gone, but Palma generally has no problem reloading from year to year. Chad Davis (LB) will lead the defense.
