LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Recruits Unlimited hosted its largest talent showcase of the spring thus far Saturday, putting 320 high school football prospects on display at the adidas Elite Camp on the campus of UCLA.
Top college programs from all over the country were on hand to check out California's always-plentiful talent pool, including Louisiana State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Southern California, UCLA, and Washington.
"Anytime you get this number of kids together, the number of high-level kids goes up," Recruits Unlimited President Greer Monterastelli said. "I wouldn't be the first to say this, but Southern California is obviously a highly-recruited area, and just by the coaches who were in attendance and number of schools that were represented, that speaks for itself."
Athletes from Arizona, Hawaii, Minnesota, Nevada, and Utah joined the large contingent of Californians.
Here is a quick look at some the camp's standouts;
Richard Brehaut, QB, Los Osos (Calif.): Brehaut threw for nearly 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns as a sophomore at Los Osos, and will have plenty of college programs following his progress after Saturday.
Justin Brown, OL/DL, Compton (Calif.): Brown is an emerging junior-to-be at Compton, and although he didn't measure in Saturday, he was listed at 6-3, 227 pounds as a sophomore on the Tarbabe roster, so size isn't much of a concern.
Sammy Cervantes, OL/DL, Imperial (Calif.): Cervantes doesn't possess prototype size at 5-10, 279 pounds, but he was productive on the field for Imperial as a junior with nine sacks.
Covaughn Deboskie, RB/DB, Chandler Hamilton (Ariz.): Deboskie racked up seven 100-yard rushing days in Hamilton's final nine games, helping the Huskies to a 5A state title. He finished with 1,224 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground as a junior and measured in at 6-0, 187 pounds Saturday. Deboskie is a national-level recruit with the likes of Clemson, Florida, and Michigan joining most of the Pac-10 in pursuit of his services. Deboskie was joined by his junior-to-be brother, Caleve.
Cedric Foster, RB/LB, J.W. North (Calif.): Nevermind the fact that he measured in at around 5-7, Foster can play, as evidenced by 1,582 yards he piled up for unbeaten J.W. North of Riverside last season. At 192 pounds, Foster played both ways for the Huskies, collecting 66 tackles and an interception.
Damien Holmes, TE/DE, Colton (Calif.): Holmes is an imposing specimen and has a resume on the field to match. Offensively, he caught 25 passes for 396 yards and a touchdown for the Yellowjackets last season, while recording 72 tackles and 14 sacks at defensive end.
Malik & Marquis Jackson, Birmingham (Calif.): The Jackson twins helped Birmingham capture a City Section title, teaming up for 17.5 sacks. Both should be highly sought after when all is said and done with the likes of Florida, Oregon, and UCLA as common favorites.
Kurt Mangum, LB, Chandler Basha (Ariz.): After impressive showings at the U.S. Army National Combine in San Antonio and Saturday's adidas Elite Camp, Mangum's stock is on the rise. Mangum, who measured in at nearly 6-1 and 228 pounds, attended Hamilton High last fall but is expected to be at Basha for his senior season after totaling 42 tackles and five sacks as a junior.
Matt Scott, QB/WR, Corona Centennial (Calif.): Scott's 6-2, 193-pound frame makes him a candidate to contribute at the next level at a variety of positions, although he has excelled under center for Corona's Centennial High. As a junior, Scott threw for 1,703 yards and 10 touchdowns and ran for over 500 with seven scores.
Graham Wilbert, QB, Valencia (Calif.): Wilbert did not measure in Saturday, but performed well and was very solid for Valencia as a junior, throwing for 1,907 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Saturday's camp included a recruiting seminar for student-athletes and parents administered by Tim Wrightman of National Collegiate Scouting Association. Wrightman was a member of the Chicago Bears' 1985 Super Bowl team after earning All-American honors both on and off the field at UCLA.
Recruits Unlimited will journey cross-country for its next event, the adidas Elite Camp at North Carolina State University in Raleigh next Saturday, May 19.
