Basketball: Sealth Scandal Continues
The state's biggest recruiting scandal keeps rolling on.
The Seattle School District has notified the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, the state's governing body for high school sports, that it intends to appeal a June 5 decision by the SeaKing District.
The SeaKing District voted to strip the Chief Sealth girls basketball teams of both the 2005 and 2006 district titles (thereby nullifying how the team qualified for state). It also recommended the WIAA strip the Seahawks, nationally-ranked all season, of their two Class 3A state titles. The district has also barred Chief Sealth from playing in the 2007 district tournament.
Chief Sealth was found guilty of recruiting five players. Head coach Ray Willis and his staff were fired over incident (and their appeal of that decision was recently turned down).
It's considered the biggest recruiting scandal in state history.
The WIAA will hear the district's appeal in a public meeting July 24 in Renton. The district's decision overrode a school district ruling, upheld by the Metro League, that decided the coaches should be let go, but no titles should be stripped so as not to punish the players.
"I think the penalties are unreasonably harsh," Chief Sealth principal John Boyd told the Seattle Times.
Boyd said the Metro League's principals and athletic directors met for 2 « hours to come to their decision.
"We had a spirited, honest conversation about what we thought was fair," Boyd said. "SeaKing [board] met for a matter of minutes. This is a fairly complicated issue that takes some time to unravel. I really feel the girls on the team deserve a fair process."
Football: Coach Regains Position
Eric Kurle is back on the sidelines, and he couldn't be happier to be there.
Kurle, who built Bethel into a state football power, was set to take over a new program at a new school last fall in Graham-Kapowsin. But before his first season, he hit and injured a motorcyclist with his vehicle and registered an elevated alcohol level. He was placed on administrative leave and didn't coach that season. Kurle plead guilty to felony vehicular assault in March (receiving a three-month work-release sentence), but the state allowed him to keep his teaching credentials, and the school reinstated him as coach last week.
"I'm excited," Kurle told the Seattle Times. "I missed the kids a lot. They've been an integral part of my life. I'm lucky to get a second chance to be out there with the kids."
Baseball: State Players of the Year Named
The Washington State Baseball Coaches Association released its All-State team and named the players of the year for each classification.
The Class 4A player of the year was Jackson of Mill Creek's Travis Snider, who was taken by the Toronto Blue Jays with the 14th pick of last week's baseball draft. Snider hit .500 with 11 home runs and 45 RBIs.
Ben Guidos of Highline was the Class 3A player of the year. Guidos, who will play baseball for Washington next year, batted .588.
Jake Peden was the Class 2A player of the year after going 8-2 on the mound and driving in 35 runs for state-champion Granite Falls.
