It's not your typical Friday night basketball game. The 7th Annual MaxPreps Football Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard arrived in Illinois to present its 43rd team the highest high school football team honor in the country.
February 17th, 2012 was a night of honor and recognition for the Boylan Catholic High School Titans football team as they came out some 60 strong to receive the prestigious Army National Guard national ranking trophy and championship rafter banner. Boylan Catholic finished No. 68 in the MaxPreps Freeman rankings poll, a computer analysis, from over 16,000 teams in the land.
The ceremony was held between the sophomore and varsity basketball games. As each player arrived, they were greeted by officers of the Illinois Army National Guard and one of their own, PV2 Aroaz, as she and Sergeant Todd Diskey handed each player a commemorative Tour of Champions shirt and a wristband along with compliments on their achievement. The Army National Guard weaved through the crowd of players congratulating them as they marched into the gymnasium filled with over 700 fans. MaxPreps representative Karl Wilhelm started off the trophy presentation with mention of the Titans completing a perfect 14-0 season and how the strong coaching efforts of Head Coach Dan Appino paid off for a season of victory! He congratulated the Coach to cheers of the crowd and turned the microphone over to Sergeant First Class Andrea Bell from the Illinois Army National Guard. SFC Bell is a proud local community member and her husband is an alum of the school, so she gladly celebrated along with the team on their amazing season. As she congratulated Coach Appino, she then handed off the "Minuteman" trophy in recognition of an outstanding year and symbolizing all the hard work it takes to become a champion. The cheers were deafening as the pride filled the room and the fans stood on their feet to honor the team and coaches.
Congratulations to Coach Appino and the Boylan Titans!!!
