Both Liberty (9-2) and San Leandro (8-4) have made it this far into the playoffs, but they square off this Friday at 7:00 PM to determine who is worthy to move on. Both teams seek to continue their momentum from their previous games.
Liberty earned a pretty comfortable 35 - 15 victory over Heritage last week. One of the main ringleaders for Liberty was sophomore Jay Butterfield, who tossed the ball for 231 yards and three TDs. Butterfield also tagged on a 39-yard TD reception in the third quarter.
Meanwhile, San Leandro came out on top against Foothill last week with a 41 - 28 win. One major factor in the victory was the play of senior Alvonte Thornton, who rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns. This sound performance was nothing new for Thornton, who has been a rock for San Leandro in the past nine games. Senior Jermaine Jackson was in the mix too, providing San Leandro with two touchdowns.
The last time they met, Liberty pulled ahead with a 22 - 21 photo finish. Can it repeat its success? We'll find out this Friday.
