The 48th tour stop brings us to the home state of the Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers. The recipient for the honor was Waunakee (Waunakee, Wis.)
High School in Waunakee, Wisconsin just north of the state capital, Madison. The Warriors were to be honored during halftime of the girls' basketball game on Friday night, February 18th, on the 6th annual MaxPreps Football Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard. The 14-0 Warriors captured their 2nd straight state title, 2nd straight Army National Guard national ranking trophy and finished #60 in the final MaxPreps Freeman rankings from over 15,000 teams across the country.
Waunakee High School had the most extensive trophy collection I have seen on tour. Every trophy that the school has earned since the 1950's is displayed proudly in many different cases around the school. The visiting opponent has no alternative option, when they walk into the school, but to acknowledge the athletic excellence and dominance this school has achieved throughout its history. Upon entering the school commons where the Wisconsin Army National Guard hosted a catered reception for the football team, I met Master Sergeant Gary Jensen and his entire contingent from the Wisconsin Army National Guard, who were very excited for the trophy presentation. The pre-presentation reception was an excellent touch to a highly anticipated trophy ceremony!
Halftime of the girls' basketball game had arrived and Athletic Director Brian Smith introduced MaxPreps representative Mike Wilkes to begin the presentation. Mike explained to the the crowd how extraordinary their football team was in 2010 and beyond, and then offered some perspective by conveying that the football team has not lost a home game in 11 years!! Mike then turned the presentation to Master Sergeant Jensen who graduated from Waunakee High School and played for Head Coach Pat Rice. Then the Wisconsin Army National Guard presented Coach Rice with the Amy National Guard national ranking trophy and Coach Rice gladly accepted the trophy with hopes of us returning next year for a 3-peat.
Congrats Coach Rice and the Waunakee football team and hopefully the tour can make another trip to Waunakee High School next year. Go Warriors!!
