5A Region I District 1 recap November 5, 2013
Coronado was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from third to first in 5A Region I District 1. The Thunderbirds beat Montwood 24-23 earlier in the week.
El Dorado extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Americas, 51-29. This was the team's fourth consecutive win.
Franklin's dynamic duo of Baylor Romney and Gustavo Mendoza-Dorset proved to be unstoppable against Eastwood, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Romney threw for 269 yards and 3 touchdowns and Mendoza-Dorset had 231 yards receiving. Braxton Hatch helped Franklin's passing attack out by catching 3 balls for 38 yards.
Mendoza-Dorset had a great week catching the football as the Cougars defeated the Troopers. He caught 9 passes for 231 yards.
Lederrick Wilson was a force in the backfield as El Dorado topped the Trail Blazers.
Austyn Hill provided a threat through the air and on the ground as james althoff's team defeated Americas. He completed 19 passes for 234 yards and 2 touchdowns and also ran for 106 yards. Hill's favorite target this week was Wilson, who caught 6 passes for 93 yards.
The Rams' Jacob Aguilar and Ruben Portillo have formed a dream team this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-3 quarterback Aguilar has thrown for 2,194 yards this season, while Portillo has 60 catches for 926 yards. The Aztecs' Wilson leads the league in rushing yards with 1,755.
Two of the top units in 5A Region I District 1 will face off this week when Franklin takes on El Dorado. Daren Walker's team's offense has recorded 419 points this season, making them No. 1 in the league, while the Aztecs have permitted only 190 on the year.
Going into this week's game against El Dorado, the Cougars' Cameron Candelaria needs 96 passing yards to surpass 2,000 on the season. Accruing a total of 20 touchdowns this year, Candelaria has thrown for 1,904 yards with 4 interceptions.
Montwood's Portillo needs only 74 receiving yards against Eastwood to crack 1,000 for the season. So far this year, he has acheived 60 catches for 926 yards.
Patrick Melton's team's Isak Washington is a mere 33 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season. In 93 carries Washington has accumulated 967 yard this year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Chuck Veliz's team takes on PHIL BARRIOS's team. At the moment, the Rams are in second, while the Troopers are in fourth.
Bel Air moved up to 928 from 991 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Highlanders climbed the ranks as a result of beating the Bulldogs 23-7.
