Tampa Bay area football squads wrapped up spring training last week with spring classics and jamborees throughout the region.
Some coaches got answers to some of their questions while others have more questions now than when spring began.
In all, Bay area squads, coaches and fans got a sneak peek at the upcoming 2009 season.
Among the spring highlights:
Defending Class 4A state champion Tampa Plant watched new quarterback Phillip Ely take over the Panther offense. Ely filled in nicely last season when Aaron Murray (now at the University of Georgia) went down with a broken leg.
In Plant's spring game, Ely threw for 101 yards and a touchdown and running back T.J. Glover ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns as Plant earned a 34-12 victory against Tampa Blake.
Meanwhile, Seffner Armwood debuted junior quarterback Josh Grady, a transfer from Tampa Freedom. Grady threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to A.J. King and added a 33-yard scoring run as the Hawks pounded Plant City Durant 32-3, serving notice of another strong Armwood team.
St. Petersburg scored touchdowns on offense, defense and by kickoff return in a 48-14 spring thrashing of St. Petersburg Catholic. Brandon defensive end Ty Garner had two sacks, forced a fumble and returned an interception for a touchdown as the Eagles beat Valrico Bloomingdale 27-0.
Other standout spring performances: St. Petersburg Boca Ciega running back Latavien Washington had an 80-yard touchdown run in the first half as the Pirates topped Naples Golden Gate 20-0 in their spring contest. And Tampa Bay Tech running back Maurice Hagens pounded out 110 yards on the ground in a 24-7 victory against Tampa King.
