It was the final high school baseball game of their careers and it didn't provide a happy ending.
Maine defeated New Hampshire, 7-5, Monday in the Maine/New Hampshire Senior All-Star Game played at Hadlock Field, home of the Double-A Portland (Maine) Sea Dogs.
Maine trailed 4-3, but took the lead for good by scoring four times in the seventh inning.
"It was the best talent from Maine and New Hampshire and I was glad I could be part of this," Newmarket coach Dave Adam said. "They're good kids who know how to conduct themselves."
It was the second year of the event, which alternates between Portland and Manchester each year. New Hampshire won last year's game 21-8.
New Hampshire grabbed a three-run lead in the third, when Londonderry's Chris Caron hit a two-run triple and then scored on a passed ball.
Maine scored two runs in the fourth and tied the game in the fifth. Old Town shortstop Jarrett Lukas provided much of the Maine offense. He had three hits, including a double and a triple, drove in three and scored a run. Lukas will play for the University of Maine next season.
Brewer's Jimmy Nicknair pitched two innings to earn the victory. Scarborough's Kevin Chamberlain recorded a six-out save.
"I think this is a great event," Adam said. "It gives the kids a chance to showcase themselves."
The New Hampshire roster featured the Class L Player of the Year (Keene's Jarred Parrott), the Class I Player of the Year (Con-Val's Ross Davis), the Class M co-Players of the Year (Somersworth's Bryan Lausberg and Franklin's Mason Roberge) and the Class S Player of the Year (Lisbon's Mike White).
Also selected to represent New Hampshire were Lin-Wood's Ryan McIntosh, Pelham's Matt Levine, Portsmouth's Adam Schopick, Souhegan's Alex Manoogian, Salem's Matt Delaney, Hopkinton's Jake McManus, Spaulding's Kyle Davis, Salem's Connor Nolan, Pinkerton Academy's Juan Amador, Stevens' Ryan Davidson, Merrimack's Joe Modugno and Londonderry's Jon McMahon.
The New Hampshire team was selected by the New Hampshire Baseball Coaches' Association.
Boys Lacrosse: Seven Earn National Recognition
Perhaps no one was more surprised when the list of All-American boys lacrosse players was announced than Exeter midfielder Evan Douglass.
Douglass, a senior, was one of seven New Hampshire players to earn All-American status this year.
"I couldn't believe it," Douglass said. "I can't even explain it. It's a confidence boost. It's something I feel I worked hard for the last four years."
The other All-Americans from New Hampshire are Pinkerton Academy senior goaltender Dave Brochu, Pinkerton Academy junior midfielder Bobby Dattilo, Bishop Guertin junior midfielder Eric Harries, St. Thomas Aquinas senior goaltender Jake Katz, Bishop Guertin senior midfielder Rory McClellan and Timberlane senior midfielder Jonathan Rodrick.
