MaxPreps.com Staff Report
Recruits Unlimited pulled double-duty Saturday, hosting adidas Elite Camps in both Raleigh, N.C., and Monroeville, Pa., featuring over 600 student-athletes from all over the Northeast and Atlantic coast.
In Monroeville - 15 miles east of Pittsburgh - the headliner was without a doubt Jeannette (Pa.) quarterback Terrelle Pryor. The 6-5, 213-pound quarterback earned MaxPreps All-American honors as a junior, throwing and rushing for over 3,400 combined yards.
Despite coming in known as more as a dual-threat quarterback, Pryor was equally impressive catching the ball, according to Recruits Unlimited President Greer Monterastelli.
"Physically, he is a step above everybody else," Monterastelli said. "I think quarterback is his first option, but there wasn't anybody on the field that could stop him when he lined up at receiver."
Also a standout basketball player, Pryor threw 15 touchdowns passes a year ago and reached the end zone 27 times on foot, leading his Jayhawks to a 14-2 record.
"He didn't have to be there, but he is a competitive kid and he competed hard whether he was playing quarterback or wide receiver."
Athletes from Maryland, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia joined Pryor and a large contingent from Pennsylvania in Monroeville.
In Raleigh, perfect football weather and the opportunity to perform in front of more than 35 college coaches helped draw 385 prospects to North Carolina State University.
Northwest Halifax (N.C.) linebacker Bobby Hedgepeth was among the campers who made a nice impression in front of staffs representing the likes of Clemson, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, and Virginia.
"He was a very fast, good-sized kid," Recruits Unlimited's Casey Fries said. "Talking with some of the coaches there, they really liked the way he played."
Hedgepeth may have been as much of a force offensively as he was at linebacker for the Vikings as a junior, piling up over 1,200 yards on the ground at running back.
The big surprise of the day - with a strong emphasis on "big" - was Chapel Hill sophomore-to-be Robert Crisp. At 6-7 and 270 pounds, the offensive lineman/defensive end stole the show with his combination of size and agility.
"His footwork and coordination for being that size and being that young is really unusual," Fries said. "And he is still growing - he wears size 19 shoes."
Recruits Unlimited will host its final adidas Elite Camp of the spring at the University of Louisville next Saturday, May 26.
