Video: Trick play wins it for Tennessee team
Instead of going for tie, coach goes for the win.
They'll be talking about this play in Tennessee for years to come. Maybe even around the country.
Rather than go for a tie, Father Ryan (Nashville, Tenn.)
went for the win and it paid off with a remarkable 23-yard run by Jackson Byrd
off a fake field goal. Byrd took a toss from the holder on an end-around and scampered up the right side before a spin move got him to the end zone. It was the last play of the game in the Irish's 34-31 win over Ravenwood (Brentwood).
According to The Tennessean
, it was Byrd's third touchdown of the night and came after driving 57 yards in eight plays. The Irish (3-3) lined up for a 40-yard field goal, but instead pulled off a play for the ages, dropping Ravenwood to 4-2.
It didn't come without a lot of practice, said coach Brian Rector.
"Honestly, it's a situation we've practiced every week, and we sure have messed it up a few times this year," he told the newspaper. "We finally got it right."
