Sequoyah-Tahlequah, Sapulpa Phoenix-bound
Sequoyah-Tahlequah and Sapulpa have both been invited to participate in next December's Nike Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz.
Sequoyah-Tahlequah, the defending Class 3A state champions, have won all 19 of its contests thus far by an average of over 31 points per game. Led by juniors Angel Goodrich and Brea Brewer, the Lady Indians defeated Sapulpa Dec. 9.
Sapulpa, who was named last week's MaxPreps National Team of the Week, participated in the tournament in 2004. The Lady Chieftains are off to an 18-1 start led by junior Alyssia Brewer and senior Tatum Beer.
Both Goodrich and Alyssia Brewer are among two of the hottest junior recruits in the nation.
Large Schools Dominate Top Ten
Eight schools from Class 6A occupy the top 10 spots in Monday's MaxPreps.com rankings. Mustang and Owasso join the aforementioned Lady Chieftains in the top five.
Class 4A Weatherford breaks up the monotony, standing at fifth this week. Guard Jordan Stark leads the way for the Lady Eagles, who are 19-0 on the season. Friday, Weatherford will host McLoud in Area II District action.
Owasso and Tulsa Union have been paired in the same Regional at Tulsa Union, which is slated to tip-off Feb. 22. Santa Fe will have to get through a tricky Midwest City team led by freshman Richa Jackson. Del City, ranked seventh this week, is led by twin sisters Porschea and Desiree Jeffries and have 4-11 freshman sensation Megan Henson and Yukon to contend with.
Under the Radar
While freelancing for the Guthrie News-Leader, a pleasant surprise was unveiled while covering the Lady Bluejays. 5-9 junior Emily Davis could be a steal to any Division I school that needs a guard who can score in buckets.
Trailing 31-27 to Western Heights heading into the fourth quarter, Davis scored 14 points during a 15-0 run to lead Guthrie back for a 49-37 victory. Davis is also a coach on the floor and features a high-level basketball IQ.
Davis can rebound, score off the dribble, play point guard, and can hit the open three-point shot. Along with Mary Beth Renz of Bishop McGuinness, she is the best pure shooter in the Sooner State.
Verdigris sophomore Cassie Clarke is another player who might not even be the highest recruited player in her household thanks to older brother, Rotnei. Clarke, at 5-10, averages 22.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game for the Lady Cardinals.
