National Top 25 Scoreboard, Friday's Rundown

No. 1 Byrnes passes test against Lincoln of Tallahassee; No. 9 Corona Centennial wins another shootout with Mater Dei in California.

After a short absence atop the MaxPreps National Rankings, Byrnes (Duncan, S.C.) returned to its perch.

 

De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) took the honors for only one week before surviving an upset bid from Serra (San Mateo, Calif.), 29-28. The Spartans moved down to No. 11 this week.

 

No. 19 St. Xavier (Cincinnati, Ohio) is the first one-loss team to enter the Top 25 this season just in time for a huge showdown with Trinity (Louisville, Ky.).

 

A Top 50 battle will commence on Friday night when No. 33 Servite (Anaheim, Calif.) met No. 21 Crespi (Encino, Calif.) in what promised to be a barnburner. It was, with Crespi pulling out a 21-20 victory.

 

No. 22 Lake Travis (Austin, Texas) and gunslinger Garrett Gilbert will host Evangel Christian (Shreveport, La.) on Friday. Lake Travis moved to 4-0 on the season with a 46-31 victory over the Eagles.

Why?: A 41-20 victory over Waco (Texas) on Sept. 5 and a 42-14 victory over Boyd (McKinney, Texas) on Sept. 12.

Byrnes broke out to a 31-0 halftime lead before running away from an emphatic victory over Lincoln. Byrnes quarterback Chas Dodd completed 22-of-41 passes for 330 yards and three touchdowns for the Rebels. Jazz King latched onto six passes for 127 yards, including a 27-yard scoring reception to open the scoring night for the Rebels. Byrnes held Lincoln to 64 rushing yards on 35 carries in the victory.

 

Newport Harbor (Newport Beach, Calif.)- 2

No. 2 Poly (Long Beach, Calif.)- 26

Friday

 

Poly running back Melvin Richardson rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries and was the main difference for the second-ranked Jackrabbits. Poly sprung back into action following three straight bye weeks following a season-opening victory over Northwestern (Miami, Fla.).

Friday

 

Running back Tevin Williams stood in for the injured Dontrayevous Robinson and rushed for 179 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Trojans to the hard-fought victory. Williams scored on runs of 5 and 2 yards as the Trojans took a 17-7 halftime lead. Quarterback Denarius McGhee plunged in from 1-yard in the second half to give Trinity a lead it would never relinquish.

 

No. 4 Wayne County (Waynesboro, Miss.)- 34

Even without running back Tracey Lampley and two shortened quarters due to Mother Nature, Wayne County moved to 4-0 with a dominating victory. Malik Lofton scored two touchdowns, including a punt return from 65 yards. Calvin McDougle rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Wayne County held Starkville to 32 total yards of offense in the victory.

Armwood quarterback Mywan Jackson accounted for five touchdowns in the rout. Jackson ran for 97 yards on eight carries for three touchdowns, and added 151 yards through the air for another two scores for Armwood. Jackson’s touchdown runs covered 3, 22, and 31 yards. Jackson threw both of his touchdown strikes in the first half as Armwood led 28-0 at halftime. Armwood’s defense held Brandon to one first down in the victory.

No. 6 Phoebus (Hampton, Va.)- 48

Despite another steadfast offensive display from Phoebus, it is the Phantoms defense that continued to make the headlines. Through four games, the Phoebus defense has allowed seven points. In the victory over Warwick, Phoebus allowed six rushing yards on 29 carries and 57 yards through the air. Over on offense, fullback Chaz Robinson rushed for 89 yards, including a 65-yard touchdown. Quarterback Tahj Boyd threw for a pair of touchdowns in the first half as Phoebus led 28-0.

Revenge was sweet for Centennial. Centennial avenged a two-touchdown loss to Mater Dei last season with a resounding win over Mater Dei and quarterback Matt Barkley. Arthur Burns was the hero for Centennial, rushing for 246 yards and four touchdowns. In a first half shootout, Centennial led 33-28 at half following three visits to the end zone by Burns. Barkley completed 23-of-45 through the air for Mater Dei for 422 yards and two touchdowns.

Stone Bridge plowed its way to 57 first half points en route to a comfortable victory over Loudoun Valley. Stone Bridge compiled 443 yards of total offense in the rout. Quarterback Patrick Thompson threw for 194 yards and four scores. Running back Daniel Allen rushed for 106 yards and three touchdowns, and added a 65-yard touchdown reception from Thompson.

No. 13 South Pointe (Rock Hill, S.C.)- 76

Pat Burris returned an interception 46 yards for six to start the rout and later added a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Five different South Pointe players scored on touchdown runs. Junior CC Jones rushed for 83 yards on four carries, including a 4-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. South Pointe led 62-0 at three quarters of play and held Fort Mill to 60 yards of total offense. South Pointe also forced six turnovers in the victory.

A 14-point second quarter by Coldwater was the turning point. Tony Harlamert scored on touchdown runs of 1 and 5 yards to help give his team a 14-0 lead at halftime. Harlamert added a third touchdown run from 1-yard in the third quarter with 5:03 remaining. Harlamert rushed for 63 tough yards on 23 carries in the victory over Coldwater while quarterback Corey Klenke added 114 passing yards and a team-high 94 on the ground.

 

Colquitt County (Moultrie, Ga.)- 0

No. 16 Lowndes (Valdosta, Ga.)- 51

Lowndes relied on a steady pass defense to produce a victory over coach Russ Probst and Colquitt County. The Vikings held pass-happy Colquitt County to 75 yards through the air in the victory. Greg Reid scored a pair of touchdowns for the Vikings, including a 46-yard punt return in the third quarter. Lowndes has completely dominated its competition this season by the score of 166-7 en route to a 4-0 record.

 

Sycamore (Cincinnati, Ohio)- 14

No. 17 Colerain (Cincinnati, Ohio)- 35

Friday

 

Colerain got a stiff test from Sycamore before pulling out the victory. In the third quarter, junior quarterback Greg Tabar hit paydirt on a 28-yard touchdown run to give Colerain a 21-14 lead with 2:49 left. Just over a minute later, Nick Pressman picked off a Sycamore pass and took it 36 yards the other way for a touchdown. Trayion Durham rushed for 144 yards and a score for Colerain, while Taber added 103 yards on the ground.

Lawrence North (Indianapolis, Ind.)- 6

Senior running back Kurt Freytag rushed for 158 yards and two touchdowns as Carmel overcame a slow start on the road against Lawrence North. Clinging to a 10-3 lead at halftime, Freytag scored on runs of 3 and 13 yards to help put some distance between the Greyhounds and the hosts. Quarterback Morgan Newton broke a 3-3 tie with 9-yard touchdown run with 43 seconds left in the first half.

 

No. 19 St. Xavier (Cincinnati, Ohio)- 6

In front of 12,500 fans in Louisville, St. Xavier couldn’t get its offense on track. Trinity relied on a salty defense to record seven sacks and three turnovers in the victory. Quarterback Cameron Smyth threw two touchdown passes to lead Trinity’s offense. To make matters worse for the Bombers, quarterback Luke Massa may miss some significant time due to an injury. St. Xavier must regroup to face Elder (Cincinnati, Ohio) without its quarterback.

No. 20 River Hill (Clarksville, Md.)- 55

Malek Reed rushed for 200 yards and three touchdowns on just seven carries in the rout for River Hill. Michael Campanaro added 128 rushing yards for River Hill and reached the end zone three times in the comfortable victory.

In a heavyweight battle that was just as close as the score indicated, Crespi survived a massive test. Servite kicker Michael Loftus missed a 57-yard field goal as time expired to allow Crespi to sneak out a crucial victory. Crespi took the lead for good when quarterback Bryan Bennett struck Mikio Island on a 50-yard touchdown pass. Bennett finished with 261 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns. Kevin Cummings scored twice for Crespi on a 65-yard touchdown pass and a 31-yard interception return.

 

Evangel Christian (Shreveport, La.)- 31

No. 22 Lake Travis (Austin, Texas)- 46

Lake Travis quarterback Garrett Gilbert threw for 405 yards and five touchdowns as the Cavaliers finish their non-district slate with a 4-0 mark. Lake Travis led 39-12 at halftime behind 311 yards and four touchdown strikes from Gilbert. Cade McCrary caught six passes for Lake Travis for 149 yards and touchdown receptions from 90 and 13 yards in the second quarter. Austin Pollard latched onto two of Gilbert’s touchdown strikes, while Connor Floyd scored on a 62-yard pass from Gilbert.

 

Richwood (Monroe, La.)- 12

Wide receiver Stanley Moore caught six passes for 108 yards and three touchdowns from former star receiver Rueben Randle as Bastrop claimed its home opener. Randle finished with 169 yards passing, a 59-yard punt return for a score, and a rushing touchdown for Bastrop. Bastrop led 26-6 at halftime following four total touchdowns by Randle, including a 5-yard run to start the first half scoring spree.

Steward Butler rushed for 121 yards on four carries, including a pair of 56-yard touchdown runs to lead the Dreadnaughts. Clinging to a three-point lead at intermission, Lakeland broke open the contest in the third quarter with a 19-point scoring surge. Butler’s first 56-yard touchdown run helped break open the game for the Dreadnaughts.
