While it was a record-breaking weekend for University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, it might not be long before one of his own records gets smashed.
Tebow, who broke Emmitt Smith’s Florida touchdown record with the 39th of his career in a win against Georgia on Saturday, he may see his Florida high school record of 95 passing touchdowns surpassed in the upcoming weeks.
That’s because Oak Hall (Gainesville) quarterback Will Indianos is having yet another monster season.
After heaving six touchdown passes in a win against Munroe, Indianos sits at 91 career touchdown passes with two more regular season games to play.
Even as he is set to eclipse one of his role models, Indianos, a self-described life long Gator fan, says he is remaining focused on more important tasks at hand.
“I’ve known about it since probably the beginning of the season, but it hasn’t been something I’ve been focusing on,” Indianos said. “Winning games is first and foremost.”
On the season, Indianos has punished defenses to the tune of 1,989 yards passing and 23 touchdowns. The team’s pass-friendly offense, which Indianos calls “Florida Fun n’ Gun”, is inspired by the offense run by former Gator head coach, Steve Spurrier.
One of Spurrier’s former assistant with the Redskins, Noah Brindice, is currently the quarterbacks coach at Oak Hall and works personally with Indianos.
While the name “Tim Tebow” is a buzz word around Oak Hall as Indianos’ nears the record, he refuses to compare himself to the former Nease quarterback.
“I look up to him so much,” he said. “I don’t try to compare myself at all to Tim Tebow or (former Trinity Catholic quarterback) John Brantley.”
Indianos is unlikely to follow in Tebow’s footsteps and play for Florida. However, he is generating a ton of interest among schools across the country. The fact that he excels in the classroom combined with his family having roots in the Northeast suggest Indianos could be playing quarterback for an Ivy League school next season.
He first made a name for himself as a sophomore, when he threw for a career high 528 yards in Oak Hall’s last game. Last season, he and Plant quarterback Aaron Murray went back and forth atop the state’s passing leader boards.
A rain out to one of Oak Hall’s final games, which was never made up, left Indianos just 80 passing yards short of Murray. A season-ending injury to Murray meant the two would not be able to battle it out this season.
Indianos will look to carry his team Friday against Eagle’s View. As he goes, so goes Oak Hall. In the team’s five losses, he has thrown 9 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. In the team’s three wins, he has tossed 14 strikes, and Oak Hall has thrashed opponents by an average of 67 points.
“It would be an unreal thing to have that record…but definitely right now, the goal is winning Friday and getting into the district playoffs,” Indianos reiterated.
If he doesn’t break the record on Friday, Indianos will have at least one more opportunity. Oak Hall is scheduled to play Aucilla Christian on Nov. 14.
