AISA AAA Region 1 recap October 8, 2013
Kingwood Christian scaled the state rankings by moving to 142 from 171 this week, the biggest jump in AISA AAA Region 1. The Lions climbed the ranks as a result of defeating Lee-Scott Academy 14-10.
Ward Military Academy lost to Glenwood 48-12 last week, the largest margin of any game.
Bessemer Academy's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Lucas Vining threw for 116 and 2 touchdowns and Matt Kyker had 48 yards receiving. On the ground Cody Brown contributed 76 yards. Jaylon Winston helped Bessemer Academy's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 30 yards.
The Rebels' dynamic duo of Vining and Kyker proved tough for Macon-East Montgomery Academy to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Winston helped Bessemer Academy's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 30 yards.
Kingwood Christian's Gavin Sumrall and Montez Haynes led the league in both passing and receiving yards. Sumrall has thrown for 1,754 yards this season, while Haynes has 34 catches for 790 yards. Thomas DeGrange from the Warriors leads the league in rushing with 516 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Bessemer Academy takes on Tuscaloosa Academy. As it stands, Josh Wright's team is in second, while the Knights are in third.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when the Rebels take on Tuscaloosa Academy. Bessemer Academy has allowed 101 points this season, while Robert Johnson's team has given up 134. The Rebels allowed 13 points last week as they topped the Knights.
Steve Birmingham's team and Lee-Scott Academy played the most contested game in AISA AAA Region 1 this week, with Steve Birmingham's team eventually emerging with a 14-10 victory.
