This year's Player of the Year may look a little familiar. Windward's Jordin Canada is the MaxPreps California Girls State Player of the Year for 2013-14 for the second consecutive season.
Winner of the honor as a junior, Canada had another strong season as a senior, earning Player of the Year honors for the Open Division in the Southern Section, as well as from the Los Angeles Times.
Kelli DiMuro of
Chaminade (West Hills) is the state coach of the year after leading her team to the Division II state championship. The Eagles dominated one of the top programs in the state in beating Archbishop Mitty 80-51 for the crown.
The MaxPreps All-State teams are divided into five divisions based on
the California state enrollment divisions. Those teams playing in the
Open Division of the state tournament were placed in a division based on
their enrollment. Those schools that played in the Southern Section
Open Division were placed in the division they played in during the
state playoffs.
A first, second and third team was chosen for the
overall All-State team with 15 players listed as honorable mention (in no
particular order).
A first and second team were also chosen for each
division. The overall all-state teams included two guards, two forwards
and a center. The divisional teams did not necessarily follow that
format.
The MVPs for each division include Katie Lou Samuelson of Mater Dei in Division I, Kelli Hayes of Archbishop Mitty in Division II, Sabrina Ionescu of Miramonte in Division III, Canada in Division IV and Marissa Hing of Pinewood in Division V.
