Video: Maury football highlights - Recap, Maury vs. Norcom
See Maury High in action earlier this season against Norcom.High school football players love emulating the pros, from celebrations to uniform styles to nicknames.
Protest appears to be the most recent example.
A majority of the
Maury (Norfolk, Va.) players dropped to a knee Friday before the team's contest against Grassfield,
according to photos given to the Virginian-Pilot. Head coach Chris Fraser was not one of the ones kneeling during the Star Spangled Banner, and some of his players also chose to stand, but a majority dropped to one knee in similar fashion as NFL players like Colin Kaepernick, Brandon Marshall and Eric Reid.
Those NFL players have cited racial inequality in the United States as their reasoning for silent protest.
Fraser, the team's coach, told the newspaper that he respected his players' right to protest.
"I stand behind them but also I am going to do what I believe in, too," he told Brian Saunders II of the Virginian-Pilot. "If they believe in a cause that's fine ... Our school system said that's their freedom."
