Mission Viejo (Calif.) came into Saturday's contest ranked No. 3 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings, but was stunned by
Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, Calif.), 21-16. Long Beach Poly was ranked No. 198 nationally and No. 26 in the Freeman Rankings for California coming into the week.
The Jackrabbits were up 14-10 at the half after taking the lead on a
Manusamoa Luuga touchdown run in the second quarter.
Long Beach Poly expanded its lead to 11 points entering the fourth quarter. LBP's lone score in the quarter came on a
Gerard Wicks touchdown run.
The Long Beach school was ahead by as much as 11 before the Diablos pulled closer.
Mission Viejo's
Alex Suchesk played well. The junior ran for one touchdown. He has now scored three touchdowns on the season.
Wicks was the top performer for the Jackrabbits. The senior running back ran for two touchdowns.
Led by
Iman Marshall, Long Beach Poly had given up an average of 17.5 points prior to the contest. The 16 points that MV ended with were well below its average of 28.3 coming into the game.
LBP got revenge for last year's 17-12 loss to the Diablos with the victory.
The defeat comes as a step back for Mission Viejo, which notched a 42-10 victory over Westlake in its previous outing.
