MaxPreps National Team of the Week
Evangel Christian (Shreveport, La.)
Once a mainstay in national high school football rankings, Evangel Christian has been humbled in recent seasons. Friday night against Louisiana superpower Bastrop, the Eagles gained a huge measure of redemption by ending the Rams’ 49-game winning streak.
Senior running back CerDerrick Tyson, who rushed for 66 yards on 13 carries, provided the exclamation point with a 35-yard sprint to the end zone in the fourth quarter. Tyson also threw an 80-yard touchdown pass in the opening quarter of the 28-22 victory.
The Eagles – aided by a Longview (Texas) forfeit – are 6-1 on the season with the only loss coming to a Garrett Gilbert-led Lake Travis (Austin, Texas) team. Evangel Christian has looked dominant since that setback, outscoring its last four opponents – including Bastrop – 213-22.
Bastrop’s loss ends a historic period of dominance for the northern Louisiana school. In addition to the 49-game winning streak, the fourth-longest nationally among 11-man teams, the Rams also saw runs of 40 home wins and 36 regular season victories come to an end. Head coach Brad Bradshaw’s squad will still have an opportunity to add a fourth-straight state title to its legacy.
Honorable Mention: Allen (Texas), Skyline (Sammamish, Wash., VIDEO), Soldotna (Alaska), St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)
MaxPreps National Player of the Week
Domonique Barnes, RB, Burroughs (Burbank, Calif.)
Domonique Barnes accomplished arguably the most impressive feat we have come across all season in a victory over Hoover of Glendale Thursday night.
Barnes finished with 204 yards and seven touchdowns on just 15 carries, scoring on six-consecutive carries in the first half. The 5-foot-9, 190-pound senior reached the end zone on runs of 1, 9, 55, 6, 34, 20 and 1 yards.
The Burroughs running back has piled up 884 yards and 13 touchdowns in five games this fall.
