WHEELING, W.Va. – Montverde Academy (Fla.) made it a clean sweep of Chicago on Saturday night at the Cancer Research Classic while continuing its quest to be called the best high school basketball team in the United States.
After beating Windy City powerhouse
Whitney Young at the City of Palms Classic last month, Montverde Academy crushed
Jabari Parker and three-time defending Illinois Class 4A state champion
Simeon 82-53 at Wheeling Jesuit University's McDonough Center.
Montverde Academy entered the contest ranked No. 3 in MaxPreps.com's Academy Top 10. Simeon is No. 7 in the Xcellent 25 traditional high school rankings.
"We've had really good chemistry and nobody really cares who scores," Montverde Academy head coach Kevin Boyle said. "Nobody cares who's MVP of a game or tournament."
The Eagles (15-0) trailed early after Parker – a recent Duke verbal commitment – hit his only two 3-pointers of the game while being defended by 6-foot-8
Devin Williams, who will join Bob Huggins at West Virginia next fall.
Kasey Hill, a five-star point guard headed to Florida, decided to do something about that.
"They got off to a good start, it looks like Parker is Parker again," Boyle said. "Kasey comes over to me, at 6-foot, and says, ‘I want to guard him.' He has seven quick points. After that, he (Parker) was basically invisible the rest of the half.
"You take away the 12-4 start and I think it was a 37-point game."
Dakari Johnson – who committed to Kentucky on Saturday – recorded team highs of 18 points and 15 rebounds for Montverde Academy. Williams added 15 points, standout junior
D'Angelo Russell 14 and Hill contributed 13 points and five assists.
The Eagles went on a 28-10 second-quarter tear and cruised from there.
Parker finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds, but also had four turnovers. Edward Morrow was the only other Wolverine to finish in double figures with 10 points.
In addition to victories over Whitney Young and Simeon, Montverde Academy also has lopsided wins over Xcellent 25 No. 2
Lone Peak (Highland, Utah) and No. 3
Long Beach Poly (Calif.) on its resume.
"The best team we've played by far is Whitney Young," Boyle said. "They're the second-best team in the country, in my opinion. I haven't seen Findlay (Henderson, Nev.)."
The Florida powerhouse still has contests with nationally-ranked
Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) and
Huntington Prep (W.Va.) on the schedule.
