Friday’s first round Class 5, District 2 battle with Chaminade appeared to be the test
Webster Groves might need before finishing district play and heading into the Class 5 state football playoffs to defend its 2009 Class 5 title.
But the exam never transpired. Instead, the Statesmen bolted out to a 14-0 first quarter lead, and then pulled away for a 39-7 first round district win over Chaminade.
Aaron Daniels and Mike Cole struck from afar early for the Statesmen. Daniels raced into the end zone from 52 yards out just 64 seconds into the game, and Cole reeled in a 65-yard strike from Webster Groves quarterback Rayshawn Simmons about seven minutes later.
Chaminade all-state candidate
Rob Standard scored following a 10-yard run to pull the Flyers within 14-7. But Webster Groves scored the final 25 points to move to 1-0 in district play.
Standard highlighted a balanced Flyer attack by rushing for 171 yards and a touchdown. Chaminade signal caller
Christian Suntrup, a Boston College recruit, threw for 92 yards as the Flyers produced 284 yards of total offense.
Led by Daniels' 108 yards rushing and two touchdowns, the Statesmen produced more than 500 yards of total offense. Simmons threw for 186 yards, including two completed aerials to Cole for 107 yards.
“I thought our defense really stepped up, did a nice job and our offense put enough pressure on them where they made them always play catch-up,” Statesman coach Clifford Ice told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
With the win, Webster Groves extended its winning streak to 21 games. Chaminade was the last team to knock off the Statesmen after winning a 21-13 decision in October 2008.
The top-ranked Statesmen (7-0) will host unranked but 6-2 Parkway Central Friday after the Colts had a six-game win streak halted by Parkway North (7-1) 35-14 in the other first round District 2 contest. The second-ranked Vikings will travel to tackle sixth-ranked Chaminade in the other week two district tilt.
The top two teams in the district will move on to Missouri state football playoff bracket play.
