Detroit Pershing High School organized a varsity vs. Class of 1999 basketball game to highlight the award being presented to the boys varsity basketball team. The gym was really ‘rockin’ as the student body and many of the locals turned out to see the team honored. “These kids really love basketball,” commented one staff member.
Pershing’s Doughboys finished first in the entire state of Michigan for the fifth time in their storied history and 3rd nationally in the MaxPreps national ranking poll. MaxPreps’ Larry Merx was on hand to introduce the MaxPreps Tour of Champions campaign to Pershing and talked about all the team’s accomplishments on the court.
Staff Sergeant Darren Davis of the Michigan Army National Guard was present to award the prestigious National Ranking Minuteman Trophy to head Coach A. W. Canada in front of a packed gymnasium. Finishing 3rd in the USA out of 20,000 boys’ teams is quite an accomplishment!
“I’m very proud of these guys, especially this group of seniors, for making it happen. This is our first state championship since 1993,” Coach Canada declared.
