Miramar (Fla.) grabbed the lead when they scored a touchdown with 9:00 remaining in the fourth quarter and held on to upset
St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) 21-20 on Saturday. The score was the final lead change in a back-and-forth contest that featured three lead swaps.
The Patriots led 13-10 at halftime, but the Raiders regained the lead on a
Wade Freebeck touchdown pass to
Devante Peete with 9:00 to go in the third.
By the end of the third, Miramar found itself trailing by seven points as St. Thomas Aquinas captured the lead thanks to two scores in the quarter. STA scored on a touchdown pass by Freebeck to Peete and a field goal by
Charles Courtney in the quarter.
The loss came as a surprise for the Fort Lauderdale school, which entered the game ranked No. 4 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for Florida, while MHS was ranked No. 12. The Raiders came into the game having won four of the past six games between the two teams.
Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 27-20 win for the Patriots.
The defeat comes as a step back for St. Thomas Aquinas, which notched a 27-13 victory over Curtis in its previous outing. The win brought Miramar's winning streak to four games. The loss snapped St. Thomas Aquinas' two-game winning streak.
