SACRAMENTO, Calif. — One of the better high school track and field track meets in the state, if not the country, takes place Saturday at American River College.
The 34th Sacramento Meet of Champions is often a precursor and measuring stick for the California Interscholastic Federation state meet, which takes place in five weeks at Buchanan High School in Clovis.

With often hot conditions, the Sacramento MOC often produces some of the top times in the country. Athletes largely from Northern California, along with numerous ones from Southern and Central California, along with scattered ones from Oregon and Nevada annually partake in the event.
Here are the meet records for the Invitational Divisions, which start at 5 p.m. (field events) and 5:30 (running events):
Boys: 100 (10.36), 200 (21.03), 400 (47.03), 800 (1:48.85), 1,600 (4:09.70), 3,200 (8:55.19), 110 HH (13.69), 300 IH (36.23), 400 relay (41.16), 1,600 relay (3:13.94), long jump (24-3½), triple jump (49-10¼), pole vault (17-1), shot put (63-2) and discus (193-3).

Among the many top athletes scheduled to participate are:
* Defending state long jump and triple jump champion Nate Moore (
Castro Valley, Calif.), who two weeks ago recorded the best all-conditions long jump by anyone west of Texas in 25 years with a wind-aided leap of 25 feet, 10 inches while winning the Mt. SAC Relays title in Walnut.
* Defending 100 hurdles champion Marquis Morris (
De La Salle-Concord), who also has the state's top 300 hurdles time (36.94).
* The state's top two female long jumpers in Meghan Tucker (
Placer-Auburn, 20-1) and MacKenzie Arnold (
River Valley-Yuba City, 19-11).
* In the 400, state leader Frank Kurtz (
Heritage-Brentwood, 47.35) and Joe Herrera (
Tulare Western-Tulare, 47.67) should battle it out.
* The girls hurdles features national shuttle record holders from
Vacaville, Pattriana Perry, Diara Cook and freshman Jurnee Woodward.
* The girls 100 should be a great matchup between
Skyline's (Oakland) Destiny Smith-Barnett versus
San Leandro senior Gabriella Cantrell, who last year with 11.50 and 23.77 at the state meet.
Deer Valley-Antioch junior Briana Guillory could make strong push. Smith-Barnett has wind-legal times of 11.84 and 24.48 to lead the San Francisco Bay Area.
*
Lowell (San Francisco) senior John Hogan and De La Salle senior and Stanford-bound Blair Hurlock should have quite a showdown in the distances. Hogan has gone 4:10.99 in the 1,600 and Hurlock 8:58.28 in the 3,200. It's not clear of
Redwood (Larkspur) distance runner Frederick Huxham (4:14.32 and 8:55.03) will compete.
