The Rice Raiders will look to defend their CHSAA state title with a talented core of returning guards and promising big men, back from a team that finished 27-4.
Kemba Walker, a University of Connecticut recruit, highlights a deep backcourt, that also includes Chris Fouch, Durand Scott, and junior Dorvell Carter. Having four Division I-caliber guards will allow coach Maurice "Mo" Hicks to run an up-tempo offense that has been Rice's trademark.
"We have always excelled at playing a three or four guard offense. We've been doing that for years," Hicks said.
6-foot-7 Tyler Montplaisir anchors the frontcourt. He may receive some youthful assistance, as the Rice freshmen team is even bigger than the varsity squad, featuring four players 6-6 or taller.
In addition to the team's rigorous New York City schedule against the likes of Christ the King, Holy Cross, and St. Raymond's, the team has a showdown with perennial PSAL power Lincoln in February at the PrimeTime Shootout.
The team also plans to travel to games in Baltimore, Delaware, and Hawaii.
With such a challenging schedule, Hicks is taking a simple approach and not trying to look too far ahead.
"We just want to get better every game," Hicks said. "We want to keep continuing to work hard, and improve on what we did last year."
