Trevor and I just returned from Papa John's Cardinal Stadium after seeing an impressive St. X. victory over Trinity, 24-15.
The game was not really as close at the score might indicate. Trinity scored a touchdown with just under one minute remaining, but failed to convert on a two-point conversion. The St. X. defense was stifling all night long, chasing Will Stein out of the pocket constantly, preventing him from establishing a consistent passing game. Deuce Finch was the game's MVP. He was extremely impressive. A powerful runner with breakaway speed, he scored on the Tigers second play from scrimmage, breaking a huge run. He also picked up the slack after quarterback Ben Zoeller went out with an ankle sprain.
With all the hype about the game, I was expecting a lot...and I wasn't disappointed. The official attendance was 37,500 people. And everyone of them that we encountered in the parking lots and around the stadium were extremely gracious and welcoming. Special thanks goes out to the kind St. X. fans who fed me and Trevor on our way into the stadium. We got there around 6:00, and the parking lot was already packed. It was truly an amazing experience on a number of levels. The city of Louisville is a great, sleepy little Southern town, and I can safely say that both Trevor and I would love to return next year to watch this incredible rivalry once more.
Tomorrow we're off to California, where we'll begin preparing for the big De La Salle/Mission Viejo game next Saturday. More video from tonight is coming, once Trevor and I can get it up. Thanks for watching. Drop us a line, we'd love to hear from you! -SS
