The 13th Annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard passed through Michigan on Friday, Feb. 23 to honor Muskegon (Mich.)
High School and its football team for winning a state championship and earning a high national ranking.
Shane Fairfield’s Big Reds club opened the 2017 season with a 56-0 drubbing of Pioneer. Then, 13 wins later, the Big Reds concluded the season by competing in their second straight state title game and completed the season unbeaten. Muskegon outscored its competition 722-88 and posted seven shutouts. The Big Reds held 11 foes to 10 points or less.
After shellacking Harrison 28-10 in the MHSAA Division 3
state championship contest, the 14-0 Big Reds claimed their sixth state football title and earned the No. 50 ranking in MaxPreps' National Rankings
out of 16,000 football teams across the country! Trailing 10-7 in the opening quarter, Muskegon quarterback La'darius Jefferson went to work scoring the final three touchdowns of the state title football game.
MaxPreps and the Michigan Army National Guard joined forces in honoring Muskegon football at halftime of the boys varsity basketball game against Mona Shores, an 80-49 Big Reds win. Fairfield and a few of his players were interviewed ahead of the celebration.
An impressive piece of hardware, the Army National Guard national ranking trophy will be awarded to just fifty football teams across the nation. Staff Sergeant Ryan Lamb of the Michigan Army National Guard was on hand to award the trophy to Fairfield and the Muskegon football program. SSG Lamb congratulated Fairfield and the state champions before presenting them with commemorative Tour of Champions t-shirts, a nationally ranked rafter banner, and the trophy to commemorate their state championship season.
Coach Fairfield and his staff have obviously laid the groundwork for a winning culture at Muskegon High School. Congratulations Big Reds on another fantastic football season! Click here
