Given their disadvantage in the MaxPreps state rankings, Athens should expect quite the challenge on Friday. They will look to defend their home turf against Maroa-Forsyth at 7:00 PM. Each of these teams will be battling to keep a win streak alive as Athens skips in on five wins and Maroa-Forsyth on six.
Athens got themselves on the board against Pittsfield-Griggsville-Perry last Friday, but Pittsfield-Griggsville-Perry never followed suit. Athens steamrollered Pittsfield-Griggsville-Perry 49-0. Athens' success was spearheaded by the efforts of junior Nic Laird, who rushed for 59 yards and 2 touchdowns, and junior Jack Richards, who threw 2 TDs and picked up 42 yards on the ground. Laird has been a consistent playmaker for Athens as this was the 3rd good game in a row from him.
Meanwhile, Maroa-Forsyth put the finishing touches on their 5th blowout victory of the season. They took the matchup and then some with a 41-0 victory over PORTA/Ashland-Chandlerville Central. With Maroa-Forsyth ahead 20-0 at the half, the match was all but over already.
Athens took a serious blow against Maroa-Forsyth the last time the two teams met, falling 15-56. Since neither squad is a stranger to landslide victories this season, you'd better bet it will be hard-fought showdown.
