hit 25 home runs for Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) this year, but his latest home run might be his most impressive of the year.
Playing for the West All-Americans in the Perfect Game All-American Classic presented by Rawlings, Gallo blasted a reported 442-foot home run at PETCO Park on Sunday en route to earning game MVP honors.
Gallo hit the home run off of East pitcher Lucas Sims in the bottom of the second inning. The home run allowed the West to go on and capture a 6-2 win and even the all-time series at 4-4-1.
The big blast by Gallo was one of two runs the West scored in the inning. The West also added four runs in the third to take a 6-0 lead. Following Gallo's homer, Rio Ruiz
raced home on Tanner Rahier's groundball out. Courtney Hawkins
doubled Ruiz, who had walked, to third base and set up Rahier's RBI.
The West added four more runs in the third. Ruiz had the big hit in the inning with a two-run single that scored CJ Hinojosa
and Trey Williams
. Hinojosa had singled home C.J. Saylor earlier in the inning and Williams reached on an error that scored a run.
The East broke the shutout in the fourth inning on some fancy baserunning by Jameis Winston
. After reaching base on a single, Winston stole second and reached third on a wild pitch. One of the top football recruits in the country, Winston then stole home for the East's first run.
The base hit by Winston proved to be the only hit of the game for the East, which scored another run in the eighth inning on a bases-loaded walk to Nelson Rodriguez
For the East, Sims took the loss but had two strikeouts. Clate Schmidt
, Duane Underwood and Matthew Crownover
all had two strikeouts apiece.
For the West, Max Fried
struck out three in his one inning of work while Hunter Virant, Austin Fairchild
and Ryan McNeil
all struck out two apiece.
